Does anybody know anything about Greengardens, Rathcline? It has come up in records and is apparently in Longford. We were wondering if it were an estate of some kind? Or a small section of the town? Any info would be apprecited!

  • Colleen:

I did not locate Greengardens. There is a townland in Cashel parish Co. Longford called Greenhall Lower and also Greenhall Upper.  Cashel civil parish borders Rathcline civil parish to the southeast.

Can you share the records where Greengardens is shown?

  • Thanks, TGF.  If the townland is Barnacor, then what exactly is/was Greengardens?  We cannot find any reference to it when we google it.

The records that we found that have "Greengardens" are 1)  On a ship passenger list for an Irishman emigrated to the U.S.  he put his last residence as "Greengardens."   2) On a 1914 civil marriage records, the bride put her residence as "Greengardens."  I understand Greengardens is probably not an official place, I'm just trying to get an idea of exactly what it was.

Also.....In that same area (Lanesborough) is a townland called "Gurteengar."  Could this this be another name for Greengardens?  (Maybe an Irish form?)

    Thanks!

  • Someone with a post bcalkin longford was inquiring about his relative Edward Curran who was from Greengardens in Rathcline Parish. I could not retrieve the post was dated 2014. Said Eward he was a relative and born 1813 ? I think he was born 1819. Edward was my Great grandmother's brother. She was Mary Curran and married John Dempsey in 1856.  They lived in Greengardens which was same place as Barnacor today. It is a small place with a few houses on old road to Killashee. Edward did quite well in Brooklyn and had a well known saloon on a square there that for a time was called Currans's Square. He also left $100.00 to my grandfather, Tom Dempsey, via Ed's son.  Tom married Bridget Foley from accross the river in Roscommon. They met and married in RI. Bridget died 1914 when my mom was 18 months. Tom was left with six kids oldest 14. They kind of got scattered around. Tom got the kids all together again under one roof in a two tenement house. Six months later he fell from a roof and died three hours later. They only had a few things one was the address Greengardens. Mom saved her her pennies as a child to visit Ireland. She made it back in at age 89 in 2000. It brings back memories to me now. One was going off the road to Greengardens when getting dark. There were puddles in the dirt road and I went off the road into a ditch. Had to jack the car up and push it sideways a few times to get it back on the road. We got to visit the old farmhouse. The people loved mom. Would like to get in touch with bcalkin longford if possibe about Edward Curran. Thank you.  Jim

  • It is found in the townland of Rathcline, Co. Longford. The drift hunters name comes from the Gaelic word rath, meaning enclosure or io games fortification, and cline meaning slope or hill. It was built in the 16th century by the O’Dwyer family.

  • An Irish immigrant to America listed his last address as "Greengardens" on phrazle the ship's passenger manifest. 2) The bride listed her address as "Greengardens" on the official marriage certificate she filed in 1914. I realize Greengardens is probably not a real location; I'm only trying to picture it in my mind.
