My grandparents Mary Ann Hackett and Michael Fitzgerald were from Galway.  They separately went to Boston, MA and married there.  They were born around 1865 and were in Boston married having their first child Thomas Joseph in 1890 (he died in WWI as an Irish Soldier in 1917.   I am seeking information about their families in Galway and burial of Thomas Joseph.

Thank you.

Do you possibly have parents names for either Michael Fitzgerald or Mary Ann Hackett?

Looking at the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie   I located three leads for Mary Ann and two leads for Michael.

    MaryAnn Hackett

See first record at link 1864

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

See sixth record at link 1864

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

Mary Hackett baptized September 24 1865 father Thomas Hackett mother Mary McDermott RC parish Rahoon. They lived in Shangort.

    Michael Fitzgerald

See second record 1864 Michael Fitzgerald

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

There was also a January 18 1864 baptismal record for a Michael Fitzgerald father John Fitzgerald mother Catherine Neale Portumna RC parish

Let me know if any of these records appear to be for your ancestors abnd let me know what questions you have.

  • Thank you for your help.  Attached is a Marriage Record showing the parents first names as

Thomas and Honora for Mary Ann Hackett

It is unfortunate that the marriage record did not show the maiden names of the mothers since the maiden name is the best clue to find baptismal records.

I did not find any records for Mary Anne using Thomas and Honora as the given names of the parents. For Michael Fitzgerald, I made the assumption that he may not have come from Galway.

As you likely know, civil registration of births started in 1864 but we can tell for sure whether Michael was born before 1864 or 1864 or later. I found three possible leads.

There is a Michael Fitzgerald with father Thomas Fitzgerald and mother Margaret Cuskey baptized in St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral in Dublin on October 2 1861.

Roots Ireland had a December 25 1862 baptism in Tramore Co. Waterford with father Thomas Fitzgerald and mother Margaret Flanagan.

Regarding the burial place of Thomas Fitzgerald, I assume he died in France or Belgium and would he be buried in one of those countries?

Roots Ireland had an October 4 1863 baptism in Monasterevin RC parish in Co. Kildare with father Thomas Fitzgerald and mother Margaret Molloy.

  • Thank you Roger.  I am going to share this wonderful information with our family reunion attendees next weekend.

I think that one of my cousins mentioned McDermott so this entry you found might be the puzzle piece:

Mary Hackett baptized September 24 1865 father Thomas Hackett mother Mary McDermott RC parish Rahoon. They lived in Shangort.

I didn't see this entry when I put in the search data.  Please what am I doing wrong?

Thank you very much for your kind attention to this.

    Have a nurturing weekend.

I assume you are using Roots Ireland. Search under Galway West Just put in Mary Hackett and 1865 and leave out the parents names. Three records will come up but you want the 1865 record. I looked for a civil birth record but did not find one. In the early days of civil registration, as many as 20% of the events were not registered.

  • Hi Michele,

If Thomas Joseph was an Irish soldier, that means he fought in the British army in WWI.  It would seem more likely that he fought in the U.S. army. Anyway, you can search for his records at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, https://www.cwgc.org/

    Good luck!
