Do I need help! Visiting Ireland in September. My ancestors are from Rathkeale and County Sligo. I have traced my great grandmother, Catherine Hallinan who immigrated to NY (not sure when). She born in Castleconnaugh, Sligo in 1878. On her death certificate it states that her mother's maiden name was Maloney, but only records I can find in Ireland of a Catherine Hallinan show her mother's name as Malowney. Could it be the same name, different spelling?
My desire is to stay in the town my ancestors were born in. Can someone help me as to where we should stay in Castleconnaugh? Nearset I can find is a city called Ballina.
So glad I found this site. Looking forward to hearing from someone.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The record you located was for a birth in 1871. The mother's maiden name was Mullowny which is close to Maloney. Did the death certificate show her father's name as Domnick? This family lived in Tullylin townland in Castleconor civil parish although many of the church records show Rathvanny which is not an official townland but likely a local place name. Tullylin is about 14 kilometers from Ballina so as long as you have a rental car, a hotel in the Ballina area would be a good choice.
If this is the correct family, Caytherine had at least six siblings and the parents married in February 1861.
Date of Marriage:12-Feb-1861
Parish / District:CASTLECONNOR
County:Co. Sligo
Husband DominickHallinan Address Culleens
Wife EllenMalownyAddress:RathvannyPlease advise.

Thanks, Roger! Yes, death cert shows Dominick Hallinan as Catherine's father, Ellen Maloney (sp?) as mother. Spouse is Thomas Langan.
I'd love to know the name of the church they were married in, and if it's still standing, make a visit. Is there a record of when and where Ellen and Domilick died?
How do I research the names of her siblings and the date and place she emigrated from (Cobh, Dublin?) Ancestry.com isn't giving me much information. I am so happy to have heard from you.. thank you so very much!

Maureen:
The parish church is St. Joseph's and from the pictures, it is a fairly modern facility. Likely the 19th century church was on the same property but the parish can tell you.
https://www.killaladiocese.org/parishes-ministries/parish-details/?pari…
Siblings to Catherine were John 1861 (baptized 12/22) Anthony 1863 Martin 1866 Margaret 1868 Michael 1871 Dominic 1876 Bridget 1892 ( I actually think she was born in 1882 but Roots Ireland showed 1892).
Below are links to the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Dominick died in October 1911 but Ellen lived to be 93 and died in late 1931. The son Dominick died in 1947 and it showed he was a widower but I did not find a marriage record. The 1901 census shows a granddaughter with the last name Rogan. Likely Margaret married a Rogan and in fact I found her 1896 marriage record to Patrick Rogan.

The information you sent was wonderful. This is definitley my family, as I remember my mother referring to my grandmother's cousins, the "Rogans". I am going to send an email to the St. Joseph's to ask about history of the church and if there is a cemetary attached to it. I wonder if Grandma & Grandpa Hallinan's grave is there for us to visit.
I am perplexed by the name Mallowney. The New York death certificate of Catherine show clearly Maloney. I wonder which name is correct so that I can go further in Ellen Mallowney's records. It would be great if I could find her birth record, and Dominick's for that matter.
Roger, I am so very grateful for your help. I have been searching for so long. Thank you.
If I could ask for more help-
Would it be possible to find out when and what port Catherine Hallinan Langan emmigrated from? In those days, did people generally leave from Dublin or Cobh?
Is there a marriage record of Catherine? Husband's name is Thomas Langan. I imagine they left Ireland for New York together sometime before 1898, as my Grandmother, Ellen Julia Langan was born in New York in 1898.
Again, thank you,
Maureen

Maureen:
The surname was likely Mullowney in Ireland and changed to Maloney in America.
I did not find a baptismal record for Ellen Mullowney/Maloney but located a possible record for Dominick. Kilglass is the RC parish just to the north of Castleconor.

Informant 2:Ealse GallagherI was not able to locate a civil marriage record for Thomas and Ellen in Ireland so I would focus on a marriage record in NYC.
Have you looked at the Ellis Island site? www.ellisisland.org Maybe you can find Catherine and Thomas in those records? Ellis Island opened in 1892. It would show a contact in America and you can also determine which port in Ireland. Could have been Cobh (or Queenstown in the late 1800s).

HI Roger,
Been researching in New York, went to Ellis Island records and could not find Catherine Hallinan anywhere. I'm pretty sure I found Thomas, says he came over in Queenstown. When I come to Ireland and visit Cobh, will there be records there that show ship manifests? Also, I watched the Irelandxo video, and it mentions linking up with family there. How do I do that? Maybe I have cousins in Castleconnor!
I'm going to start soon on my grandfather's lineage. Will you help me with that once I am ready?
Thanks so much.
Maureen
PS.. found NY census of Catherine Langan and address where she with my grandmother and great aunts and uncles, but I still want to know on what ship and when she arrived in America :(

Maureen:
The IRO concept is to have parish liaisons assisting visitors to find where their ancestors came from in the parish and in some situations meet relatives in the parish. There are over 2500 parishes in Ireland and unfortunately we do not have parish liaisons in many parishes. Also, some of the parish liaisons like me , do not live in Ireland (I live in the States). In fact our parish liaison for North Mayo including the parish for Ballina, also lives in the States.
We do not have a PL in Castleconor parish and in fact only have two PLs in Co. Sligo. I will contact oru HQ and see if they have any suggestions for a local contact when you visit Ireland and Castleconor in September.

Thank you, Roger. I was also wondering if I could find somewhere a listing of passengers leaving Cobh (Queenstown). I am having trouble finding Catherine's name on the Ellis Island site. I thought there may be a link where I could find her on a list leaving Ireland.
I feel like I have hit a brick wall in the NY state death records. I know that Catherine's husband (Thomas) died sometime in the 1930's, but cannot find a death cert. for him. I wanted to find that so I can get a hint on his parents name. I did find his application for citizensip, which gives his birthdate and Sligo, Ireland as his birthplace. Thinking I will dig deeper into that side of the family (Langan's) once I find out more on Catherine and Ellen Hallinan.
My husband and I are traveling to Washington DC next week and I thought I would visit the National Archives to see if I can dig anything up there. In your opinion, is it worth a visit?
Thanks for the info on the PL's..look forward to your answer on that.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help.
Hope you are staying warm..

HI, just thought I could help. Recently there has been some effort in documenting headstones and digitising them here. I found this(below) that seems to line up with the Dominic Hallinan that died as a widower. Unfortunately going back to the Halinane parents of your ancestor is more difficult due to general upkeep, but the old graveyard does exist and is listed on the site Im linking to. Many left around the same time as your ancestor did, I know around that time there is no Ellis Island record for my relatives which also left for New York. They entered through Canada at the time, although no connection has been made as of yet sadly.

Id recomend a place in Enniscrone to stay as its quite close and a lovely seaside village :) Hallinan is quite a popular name there, as is Langan and the first names have got passed on also. Id say best bet is contact the local Parish Priest, as mentioned before Kilglass parish borders that area also.
Wish you the best.

Anthony, I have been lax in research for the past few months.. just saw your post.. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for this info. It was so nice of you to send it to me. My great grandmother's name was Catherine Hallinan, (born 1878, Castleconnor, Died 1948 Queens, NY.) parents names Dominick Hallinan and Elen Maloney (Malowney) .
My great grandfather, Catherine's husband is Thomas Langan., born Castleconnor, Sligo in 1872 to Michael Langan and Anne Conway. I am having a hard time finding records of Michael & Anne's death.
Someone in an Irish pub here told me "When your in Ireland, and you see a pub with an ancestor's last name on the sign, go in, order a pint and they'll tell you whatever you need to know! " LOL
I'm digging as much as I can.
Again, Anthony thank you so much.
Best Regards,
Maureen

Anthony,
I believe the photo of this grave is my great grandmother's brother, Dominick Hallinan. Could you tell me where this grave is exactly located? I am wondering if his parent's are buried in the same graveyard. Thank you so very much..

Hello - not sure if this post is still live as the last message was a couple of years back. I am a grand son of Patrick Rogan ( Farranmorgan ) and Margaret Hallinan (Culleens) who married in March 1896. Your posts were very interesting. My Uncle Patrick Rogan emigrated to New York in 1920 and was met by his Aunt Mrs Langan. I know his Uncle Michael Hallinan also went to New York before this date. Would love to know if Mrs Langan is the lady mentioned in this post and anything on the Hallinan family in the States. Many thanks - Chris Rogan

Hello Chris..
Nice to hear from you. Sorry it has taken awhile to answer.
Yes, I am sure that the Mrs. Langan that met your Uncle Patrick was My great grandmother, Ellen Hallinan Langan. Margaret Hallinan was Ellen Hallinan's sister. While we were in Ireland, we had the pleasure of meeting our cousin Mary Hallinan Culkin, and her cousin, Teresa Rogan. If I remember correctly, Teresa's father's name was Jim. She informed us of some family members in America.. Mary; Eileen; Alice; Michael; Patrick; and John. Are you related to any of these Rogans?
Where do you live? My family and I are in Texas.. Would love to hear from you again. Let's keep in touch, Chris.

Hi Maureen - lovely to hear from you. Sounds like you had a great trip to Ireland / Culleens. I live just outside London. My father, Thomas Rogan was the youngest of the 11 children born to Margaret Hallinan and Patrick Rogan. He came to England in the 1930s with his brother Martin. Jim stayed to run the farm at Farranmorgan and Katie stayed in Ireland but the rest went to the States. Glad you met Teresa - she is our first cousin. I know Cousins John Rogan & Eileen McAdams in the States I have a Sister Eileen in the States and two brothers Martin & Frank in England. Not sure I know the others you mention. - Do you know if your Great Grandmother was married in Ireland or when she got to the States. Do you know anything of her brother Michael who I also thought went to the States? Anyway it’s been nice to make contact. If I have any questions on the Hallinans I know where to come. Many thanks - Chris

GREETINGS FROM ONTARIO, CANADA
I am interested in connecting with anyone that is descended from the Rogans in County Sligo.
My Rogans were from the Parishes of Easkey, Kilglass and Castleconnor.
The original post in this thread says
"I remember my mother referring to my grandmother's cousins, the "Rogans"."

I am descended from Ann Rogan (1799) who left Ireland in 1842 with her five children. She settled in Ontario, Canada which is where I live.
I have been researching her parents and siblings. The oral history is the family was from Easkey Parish in Sligo.
I have found her brothers lived in the Parishes of Easkey, Kilglass and Castleconnor.
I gave posted previously on this message board. You will find a lot of information in these postings.
