Hi there

My GG-Grandfather was a Robert Hannan, who was born in Drummaul/Randalstown around 1841, to Charles Hannan and Rose Ann Story.  He had moved to Scotland by the 1860s and had children with a Mary Ann Cairns, from which point I have a pretty good idea of our story.  But I'm interested in the family he left behind.  As well as his parents, he seems to have had several siblings: James (1827), George (1829), Charles (1832), Catherine (1841 so maybe a twin?  She married another Storey, called Hugh but I don't know what happened to them), William (1848).  The gaps between these dates make me think there must have been others too.

Anyway, I know Hannan and Storey are both quite common names in these parts so it might be hard to untangle but I would love it if anyone could shed further light on this.

Thanks in advance!

Andy

  • Andy,

I can see a marriage for Catherine Hannan to Hugh Storey on 10.5.1865 at Randalstown chapel. However Catherine's father is named George on that certificate, not Charles. Can you confirm that Charles is the family you are looking for, before I spend time looking for the other siblings.

  • Wow, thanks so much for the speedy reply.

Charles and Rose Ann are definitely the parents so I've obviously got my Catherines mixed up (or maybe Catherine is wrong full stop).

I really appreciate your help with this.

    Cheers

  • I found a marriage for a Rose Hannan aged 24 on 15.3.1867 at Randalstown chapel. She was a daughter of Charles Hannan, farmer and she lived in Drumsough. She married Mark McLaughlin, also of Drumsough. I can't see the couple in Ireland after 1867 and suspect they had left.

Griffiths Valuation for 1862 lists 1 Charles Hannan in Drumsough. He had plot 27 which was a 2 acre farm. His name remains as tenant until 1877 when it changes to Catherine and then in 1893 to John. There are several John Hannans in Drumsough in the 1901 census, all bachelors. It's not clear which household is the one connected to Charles.

I don't see any deaths for Charles or Rose so can't say when they died. Likewise I don't see any marriages or deaths for James, George, Charles junior or Catherine. The family appear to have disappeared. Perhaps they had all left Ireland?
