I have an ancestor "from Westmeath" born 1824. His name is Patrick Hawkins. Where would he have come from in Westmeath? Are Hawkins descendents still there somewhere?

Born in Westmeath, Ireland on abt 1824 to Michael Hawkins and Margaret Hawkins. Patrick HAWKINS married Bridget Beaty and had 9 children. He passed away on 1869 in Marlboro, Monmouth, New Jersey, USA

Some family stayed in New Jersey, others migrated to New York state.

I inadvertently deleted my comments to you and also a comment from another volunteer. (McCoy: If you see this response, can you add your comment? Sorry!).

In any event, Hawkins was not a common surname in Co. Westmeath. There were no Hawkins records in the 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Westmeath and only one person named Hawkins in the 1901 census for Co. Westmeath. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were no Patrick Hawkins baptismal records in Co. Westmeath.

You may want to consider DNA testing. Possibly you may have matches on your Hawkins line.

  • Thanks much! I was poking around at the various genealogy sites and saw the same lack of the surname. I don't know what sources give this infromation "Born in Westmeath, Ireland on abt 1824 to Michael Hawkins and Margaret Hawkins" shown on Ancestry,

The surname "Hawkins" is fairly common in County Roscommon which shares a boundary with County Westmeath.

Subscription site www.rootsireland.ie has two records for "Hawkins" - Rose Hawkins baptised in St. Peters, Athlone on April 29th 1821 and Anne Hawkins baptised there on April 19th 1823.

Parents: Patrick Hawkins and Catherine Cunningham. Address: Curraghleen which is just West of Athlone Town.

There is a baptism on October 6th 1827 in the same church - Father: Peter Hawkins.

The only "Hawkins" which I found in County Westmeath was a Thomas Hawkins, Moate in 1835. He would appear to have been a policeman.

Baptism records can be found at  catholicparishregisters@nli.ie  - National Library

There is Church of Ireland family in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
