Hello, one of my paternal g-grandmothers was born in Garristown and baptized in Rolestown. Her name was Annie Hazel (Hazelton when she came to USA.) She settled in Philadelphia, PA and married a James Callaghan. Her father was James Hazel; her mother's name was Mary Grant. I have 3 requests:

1. I found a baptismal record for her, and a marriage record for her parents; however, the info is not very legible. She was baptized in Rolestown. I was hoping to find the church name and make a visit, and perhaps get baptismal/marriage copies - we come to Ireland again at the end of August.

2. Is there any way that I could meet up with someone to tell us about the area, and whether any relatives remain there?

3. Annie emigrated to the USA in either 1883 or 1885, but I cannot find a record of her arrival here. Are there records showing when she left Ireland?

Any info you can provide is much appreciated. We arrive in Dublin on 8/28.

  • I can make out most of the details on those records if that helps..

    Baptism of Annie Hazel :
    Parish : Garristown/Rolestown/Ballymadun (RC)
    Date of birth : 28th February 1864
Parents : James Hazel & Mary Grant
    Residence : Garristown
    Date of Baptism : 5th March 1865
Name of Priest John Green (P.P. of Garristown)
Sponsors (Godparents) : Thomas Connolly & Jane Scully

Marriage of James Hazel & Mary Grant
    Parish : Garristown/Rolestown/Ballymadun (RC)
    Date of marriage : 9th May 1859
Residence of Groom : Garristown, ditto for bride
Groom's Parents : Daniel Hazel & Mary 'Gallaher'
Bride's Parents : illegitimate (no details recorded)
Residence of Groom's parents : Garristown
Residence of Bride's parents : Pluck..[? poss. Pluckhimin townland]
Name of Priest John Green (P.P. of Garristown)
    Witnesses : John Ennis & Margaret …

The Civil birth record for Annie adds a few small details – James' occupation was labourer, and it seems he could not write since he was the informant on her birth and 'signed' with his mark. Civil records also include births of two siblings to Annie - Eliza born 1868 and Thomas in 1869. It looks like Eliza may have died as a child as there is a death registration showing on the index for this area, Dunshaughlin that could fit. The register image for this death is not available online yet.

I presume you have already seen the baptism of the earlier children in the same parish – Mary, Thomas (1), and also a Daniel in 1872.

There were a number of Catholic Chapels in the parish including one in Garristown, so most likely where your Hazel/Grant family attended. In the early 1800s Garristown chapel (c1840 OSI map) was located on the east side of the road adjacent to the Church of Ireland Church, and later a new, larger chapel was built on the opposite side of the road  (c1890 OSI map)

James and Mary may have moved sometime after the birth of Daniel as there's no promising matches for their deaths in the district.

Most passenger lists for this timeframe ended up in the port of arrival, and were used for immigration processing at the destination country. I have seen some UK (of which Ireland was part..) departure records but only for slightly later dates– c1890 onward.

  • Hello Teresa!

We were in Ireland in August 2018, and made an attempt to visit Garristown. We followed the GPS directions, and ended up at a crossroad, with only fields on all sides. There was no one around to ask directions from.

I would really appreciate any pics you are able to send. My g-grandmother had a very hard life, and i would like to see where she came from.

Thank you so much for your kind offer!

  • Hi Peggy,

I will be in Rolestown in the next couple of days and will take some photos of the inside of the church and the baptismal font that your great grandmother was baptized from. I have been in contact with someone to see if there are any relatives in Garristown and will revert with an update.

    All the best,

    Teresa

  • Hi Peggy,

I have just spoken to your relative from Garristown! She is going to the graveyard tomorrow and will take some photos but she doesn't think there is a headstone from the 1800s . She will speak with some of her family to get you more information. She said she would be happy to speak to you on the telephone and to show you around Garristown next time you are in Ireland. I am going through the names and dates of her great grand parents and other family members to see what the connection is to your great grandmother.

    Kind regards,

    Teresa

I am available by phone, Facetime, or Zoom!

  • Hi Peggy,

I called the priest in Rolestown parish today to see if I could take a photo of the baptismal record of Annie but unfortunately he can't do it at the moment. I will be able to take a photo of the baptismal font though. Are you on Skype or Whatsapp? If so, I could call you now if you like. I'm not on Facetime. I found a James Hazel and am wondering if it is Annie's father.

Looking forward to chatting with you and putting you in contact with your relatives!

    Regards,

    Teresa

    Hi Peggy,

I was in Rolestown church today and took some photos for you, I've attached 5 - please let me know if they all uploaded. It's a beautiful old church and likely has changed little over the years. I lit a candle for your family. I contacted the administrator of this site - Jane - in relation to passing on contact details privately, as I'd rather not post them publicly. She said if you email her your details she will forward the email to me, and I will do the same for you. Jane's email is jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com

You mentioned you're on Ancestry, what name can I find you on?

    Kind regards,

    Teresa

  • Thank you SO much for the pictures. I will share them with my cousins. The church is lovely, and I will treasure these pics. I am not currently on either of those apps, but will download them shortly.

I sent Jane my cell phone number and my Ancestry name. My info for the Hazels are under my Callaghan/Callahan Family tree. I will add these pics to my tree!

I can't thank you enough for all your kindness!
