I wonder if anyone can help with my query.

I am researching three sisters (my paternal aunts) who were all admitted to St Augustine's Industrial School in Templemore in 1925.

We have baptismal certificates for the two older girls

Catherine Quinn was baptised at Kilodeirnan Church in the parish of Cloughprior 21.10.1917

Mary Quinn was baptised at Nenagh Parish Church 7.12.1922

We cannot find a civil birth or death registration for the middle child, Anastasia (Nancy), but we are informed by Mercy Archives that she died in 1927 aged about 8.  According to the court order which sent her to St Augustine's she was born on 21 January 1919 but beyond this there are no documentary records of her existence.

I wondered if there is anyone who could check the baptismal records at the two churches (we don't know where she was born for sure) and possibly the burial records too, as we wonder if she may have been returned to her family for burial.  Certainly the orphanage cannot find any civil or parish record of her death or burial.

I appreciate that it may not be possible to get access to parish registers currently due to Covid, but is there anyone who would be able to help, or advise how to check these records?

It would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Helen,

Would you kindly give the parents' names? This would help with the research. Thank you.

  • Dear Patricia

The mother of all three girls is Mary Quinn, who was born illegitimate with surname Begley, but took her step-father's surname when her mother Anastasia Begley married, this would be from about age 3 - when Mary married her surname is recorded as McGrath.
She married a Thomas Quinn who we believe is father of the oldest child.
On the baptismal certificate for the youngest,Mary, the father's name is James Quinn (possibly an error?), but on the birth certificate for this child who was born in Nenagh Workhouse, there is no father's name recorded.
We do not know who Anastasia's father was - hoping the baptismal record might exist and record a name, again maybe this may be Thomas or James Quinn.
There is no father on the scene by 1925 when they were taken to the orphanage - only the mother's name is on the court orders
