I am trying to find any information on my grandfather Patrick Connolly.  He was born ~March 1839 to Thomas Connolly and Julia Heffern.  I think Patrick was from Galway.  He emigrated to the Canada, and ultimately lived in Rochester, New York, USA.  He had a brother Michael Connolly...who spelled his name Connelly.   Patrick emigrated around 1849 or 1850.  I cannot locate any information on him in Ireland, nor his departure.  Any information that you can provide would be helpful.

The subscription site Roots Ireland does not have any baptismal records in all of Ireland for a Connolly baptism with father Thomas and mother with the surname Heffern.  Likely the church where he was baptized no longer has records back to 1839.

Have you located the 1880 US census for Patrick Connolly in Rochester and are there any clues with that record? How long did he live? the 1900 census may also be helpful.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • If he landed in Canada it would probably be in St. John , New Brunswick or Halifax, Nova Scotia.  You may check the records there for arrivals during that time period.  The records are pretty thorough so you might get lucky.  My Connolly's landed in St. John in 1820 and there were records of them arriving.  Good luck.
