Hi! I have been tracing my Irish roots for awhile now. My ggg grandfather Samuel Cotter Henderson came to Canada in the 1870's from Rathmullan Ireland. I would like to learrn more about his parents and about his wife Martha McGowan. She did not come to Canada and died in 1883. Samuel's older brother John also left Ireland and spent years in the U.S.A. before coming to British Columbis, Canada. If anyone knowss about the McGowans I would be interested. I think that Martha's father was George McGowan. Thanks

  • Hi Lorraine and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out.
Thank you for submitting the query regarding your Henderson and McGowan family from Rathmullan in the Parish of Killygarvan. I was pointed in the right direction by my friend Roger , towards Marthas record of Death in 1887. I will have a look to see what other family information (if any) is available for that timeframe and get back to you soon as I can.
    Kindest Regards

    Hi Lorraine,

While looking up what records might be available on Iriishgeneology.ie and ancestry.com, I came across what I presume would be your own Family Tree.

    https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/108504632/family?cfpid=340071677590

You have a mast an impressive amount of information already, I am very impressed, however abit taken back as I'm not sure if an amateur Genealogist such as myself might be able to help you find more information on Samuels parents and his wife Martha.

Is there anything in particular that you are interested in such as locations etc..

This link below will show you what availability there is for records throughout County Donegal with regards to the various locations or their religious interests. You will notice that the nearer you come to the early 1800’s the less records are available.

  • Hello Lorraine,

My ggggfather is John A.Henderson by way of gggmother Mary Ann Henderson m.William Maultsaid. Their daughter Margaret Isabella Stuart Maultsaid m.Thomas Hunter Henderson s/o Arthur Cotter Henderson older brother of your Samuel Henderson who m. Margaret McGowan .It is Arthur Cotter and Samuel Cotter Henderson who settled in Chilliwack.

There is a brother named John but most people are not reporting it correctly.

Margaret McGowan is the daughter of George .She has a brother named George who married Martha Morrow. George and Martha McGowan also have a son named George who (wait for it) married Marianne Maultsaid daughter of the above William Mautsaid and Mary Ann Henderson. George #3 has a sister Mary who married Patrick Sweeney.

    Hope this helps,

    PamO,

  • Wow!! One thing that I've been finding in all this research is the repetition of names makes things complicated but this is even more confusing! I've been trying to find out something about Martha for quite awhile so this is wonderful. I've often wondered why she stayed in Ireland but maybe it was to look after the younger children and then she died before she could emigrate to Canada. I also heard somewhere that she ran a shop--don't know if that's true. Is John the brother who died in a boating accident on the great lakes? Thanks again for your help.

  • Hi Lorraine,

I was happy to find you in a tree provided to me.The only other thing I know about Martha McGowan is she is buried with with John Henderson /Mary Cotter and her son George William Henderson (1886) and Samuel, David,Samuel and Catharine Laura who died in infancy.

The correct John is John C.Henderson. Family history is that he drowned when his ship broke up in L Michigan in 1861.. However we found there were no casualties. He is still alive in 1870 and  1880 .I cannot find his death record  but I  did find his obit in the Derry Journal .

    Deaths

At Chicago,United States of America ,Captain John C.Henderson son of the late John Henderson of. Rathmullam ,County Donegal, aged 70 years.

  • Thanks Pam--I've got to look into this more. We've been doing some renovations and most of my information is is boxes right now but I hope to soon unpack and look into what happened to John. Thanks for all the information.
