The subscription site Roots Ireland has a January 15 1878 baptismal record for James Higgins father Hugh Higgins and mother Sara Thompson. Church was Granard. Also siblings William 1868 Eleanor 1870 Elizabeth 1873.

I can search for the civil birth records and the marriage record later when I have access to my PC.

I found the civil birth records for the four children mentioned above and links are below. Civil records can be found at the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie   NOTE: It appears that Roots Ireland mistrancribed the date of baptism for James as January 15 1878. The civil birth record shows January 15 1879. I then looked at the Granard parish register and he was baptized on January 19 1879.  Still have not located a marriage record.

Roger, thank you so much for taking the time to do this for me, your help has been invaluable, I really appreciate it.   My family has nothing left of James Arthur Higgins or his wife Mary, one of their sons took over the lease of the family home in Melbourne, and when they moved out, they threw everything away, even photos.  I'm wondering if Sarah remarried after Hugh died, maybe that's why I can't find a death record for her either. I'll keep investigating, and once again, thank you so much. And hopefully, I'll make it over to Ireland one day myself. Cheers, Jo.

I checked for a marriage record for a Sara Higgins or a Sara Thompson in the Granard registration district and did not find a good lead.

James Arthur Patrick Higgins was my grandfather too. My name is John Arthur Patrick Higgins. Paul is my father. Sarah Higgins (Thompson) died in St Arnaud, Victoria. It appears when her husband Hugh died she came to Australia with James as I think she had a daughter already here. I have an extract of her death certificate and one for granddad and his wife Mary née Bentley too. I have this on another pc and can send them to you.
