ALEXANDER HOEY, born Ireland approximately 1859/60.

My 2x-great gramdfather has been a genealogical roadblock for decades.

According to documentation including marriage (1882 Toronto Ont Canada) and death (1892 Toronto Ont Canada), Alexander Hoey was born in Ireland about 1859/60.  The Canadian census records for 1881 and 1892 indicate the same general statistics of approximate year of birth and origin.

I have found immigration records for a HOEY family arriving in Canada in .May 1871 (the Alexander Hoey in that family was noted as age 20).

I have found another immigration record for a HOEY Alexander arrving alone in Canada in July 1872 (age 14).

No city or county in Ireland is listed in any of the documentation that I can find so tracking Alexander in Ireland has not been successful.

Alexander died at the age of approximately 32 and his wife remarried.  Family stories about Alexander have not survived and I am hoping that I might find someone who knows something of the possible origin of my 2x great grandfather.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The subscription site Roots Ireland had one possible lead-- an 1858 Church of Ireland baptismal record in Belfast Co. Antrim. See below. Age wise, this record would fit the Alexander Hoey who emigrated in 1872 but you would need to locate his parents names. However, if your ancestor was Roman Catholic then this record is for a different Alexander.

  • Carolyn,

There is a marriage for Alexander Hoey and Mary Calwell (the Castlemore Roscommon has found), in Belfast 2.6.1849. Both aged 22. Church of Ireland.

Alexander is indexed under Hay though the name looks like Hoey to me on the certificate. Mary is Caldwell (a normal variant of Calwell).

You would need to get Alexander junior’s marriage or death certificate, for his parents names, to see if this is the right family. Alexander junior was a twin. He had a brother named Anthony.

I searched for an Alexander Hoey death 1864 to 1921 but did not find one that fitted. (There were only 5 and all were either bachelors or not of anywhere near the right age). There were 268 Mary Hoeys in the same period so too many to go through.
