Hi. I am researching 3 couples who emigrated from Ireland about the time of the Great Hunger and settled in my home town (Gorham, Ontario, New York, US). I believe they were from the Ballyea/Clarecastle area.

Couple #1, my great-grandparents: Michael HOGAN (b ca. 1832) and Susan NAGLE (b ca. 1835). Michael’s father was named John.

Michael and Susan were married in the US and all of their children were born in the US.

Couple #2: Thomas HOGAN (b ca. 1818) and Mary DUNN (b ca. 1833). Thomas’ father was named John. Mary’s father was named Micheal.

Thomas and Mary were probably married about 1851 in Ireland based on the birth of their first known child.

One child, Mary E., was born in Ireland about 1852.

Couple #3: Patrick HOGAN (b ca. 1819) and Margaret NAGLE (b ca. 1827).

Patrick and Margaret were probably married about 1844 in Ireland based on the birth of their first known child.

Their 3 oldest children were born in Ireland:

John was born in Ireland about 1845 [John served in the US Civil War and his pension application package             included a baptismal extract from the Church of Clare Abbey & Killone indicating his parents are from Ballyea.]

Mary was born in Ireland about 1847

Michael was born in Ireland about 1851.

I have been unable to find proof of the relationship amongst Michael, Thomas, and Patrick HOGAN. Also I have been unable to find proof of the relationship between Susan and Margaret NAGLE. There is circumstantial evidence that these three couples were close associates and arrived in my home town via chain migration.

On the Clare Abbey community page, it mentions parish records for baptisms and marriages, 1835-1900. It mentions that the administrator has access to those records and it would be wonderful if those records could be checked for these 3 couples and their children born in Ireland. (I was unable to find reference to these folks in the parish records on findmypast.) Suggestions for further research would be welcome.

Thanks,

Dennis Hogan

  • Dear Dennis:

Thank you for your post to the message board and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I know the parish volunteers who are active in heritage in the Clarecastle area and I have copied them with this post.  I may actually see one of them this evening, and if so I will mention the family surnames that you are looking for.

If you are not already aware of the Clare Library website, the online resources in the Family History and Genealogy section are very good.  Here is a link to the Clareabbey  civil parish page on the site for your reference:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/clare_abbey.htm

You will note from that link that the parish registers are online and in downloadable form.

Here is the link to Killone civil parish:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/killone.htm

You will note that the Killone parish registers start at 1854,but take in the years to 1882.  Again, there are other sources there to look at including headstone inscriptions, local historical articles and the census records.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Wow. THANK YOU. That's great info. For the purposes of a source citation, what would the source be? Is it something like the baptismal register from the Church of Clare Abbey and Killone or a database or...?

    Thanks,

    Dennis

  • Dear Dennis:

I'm glad that the information was of some assistance to you.  Yes, it is a transcription of the parish register of Clare Abbey and that is the best way to cite it.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    All the best,

    Jane
