Hi :) I hope you are very well.

I am searching for my surname history. I was advised to check on Irish people leaving Ireland between 1840-1852 that went to the UK in Lancashire.

Does anyone know how to find that sort of information?

Specifically I am searching for any Torpey that had left Ireland, the limit time is 1852 to see if I can start tracing them.

Thanks in advance for the help! Go raibh maith agat!

Best wishes

Ale

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You won't find records of people leaving Ireland for England in the mid 19th century. It was all one country at that time and treated as an internal movement.

There were a number of Torpey/Torpy/Tarpey/Tarpy households in the mid-19th century. Clare, Mayo, Galway, Waterford, Limerick and Tipperary were the main counties. Please provide us with any information you have so we can see if we can assist you.

  • There are no passenger records for people travelling from Ireland to England. It was just a short domestic journey (and still is in the case of Northern Ireland). No records have ever been kept for that type of travel. Worth bearing in mind that people often went back and forth for seasonal work and family events, and so your family might well have made many undocumented journeys back & forth over the Irish Sea.

All you can really do is analyse when they disappear from Irish records and when they first appear in English records such as the 1851 or 1861 censuses and draw conclusions from that.

  • Ale, Hi, what are the Christian names of the people that first show up in England.
Any ages on the Census in England and the year of the census.
    Thanks

  • Dia daoibh! :)

Thank you so much for all your warm answers, Roger, Elwyn, Margot, you are very kind.

Well, the thing is I am trying to search my link with Ireland, I live in Mexico City. All we know, my Dad and me, is that my Dad's great grandfather was born in 1852, his name is Patricio Torpey but we don't know if he actually born in Mexico, in the state of Tabasco, in the city of Jalapa, or if he was born in Ireland. We do not have records of his born register here in Mexico, in Jalapa they say the register of newborns began later than 1852.

Linking what I have found, I thought that maybe during the famine, my past relative could have traveled to get here. I downloaded the lists of Irish people who during the famine traveled to New York however, Patricio Torpey is not among them nor is detailed if someone was pregnant to start investigating that woman.

For that reason, I honestly do not know if my relatives moved to New York, UK or where. I know is as finding a needle in a haystack however, I trust I can find my link with Ireland. I am trying to get all the information I can to maybe find something.

@Roger I don't know yet where in Ireland they used to live :( but thanks anyway!

@Elwyn hat sounds like a good idea but do you know how can I access those English records? Thanks a lot!

@Margot once I can find how to access the English census, I might be able to give you more information. Thanks a lot!

Does anyone know someone in Ireland with the surname Torpey? Maybe they know a bit of history of our past relatives?

Really, thank you so much everyone, I truly appreciate your kind help.

    Best wishes!

Go raibh maith agat! (I just started learning Gaeilge so forgive me if I miss spell a word)

  • The English censuses 1841 – 1911 are in Ancestry. If you have a subscription you can search there. Likewise births, deaths and marriages in England 1837 onwards are also there.

You ask about the surname Torpey. In the 1901 Irish census there were 237 people of that name. Scattered around the country I am afraid. See:

  • Thanks a lot @Elwyn! I do not have an account in Ancestry, or well, I had but my free version expired, however I'll see the way to get in again.

@Margot, yes! yes! He was my Grand Dad, I was lucky to meet him, thanks a lot for finding this one!.

Yes, my Dad's Great Grandfather was born in 1852.

My Dad's Grandfather's name is William Torpey Andrade I showed what to find to my Dad, he said that if we can find a similar record about his Grandfather, will be very useful.

William Torpey Andrade was born in 1881 in the city of Jalapa, in the state of Tabasco, in Mexico. I hope this information helps.

    Thank you so much!!

  • Hi Alejandra,
Great I found that one for you,
This one states  Jose and the Mother Carmen Perafant
    https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RGF-9QQ5?i=4879&cc=19…
    another
    https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RG8-ZBY?i=7011&cc=192…

These are from this site below, its free, these are the only three records with Torpey Andrade.
    www.familysearch.org

I then searched Torpey births in Mexico, open spelling and got this result...can you check the names as you may recognise them.
    https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsu…
Then Torpey Deaths. Same again if you can match the names.
    https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsu…

To go back to records in Ireland you would need to join Ancestry again say for a month, the ship records would also be listed.
But, if you can wait until we are able to go back to Libraries I will see if I can get the records for you, we have access to the site.
I am not a member of Ancestry now as I spent too much time on it, I have done all my ancestors as far as I can go.
    Cheers for now

  • Go raibh maith agat Margot!

Thanks a lot for all of this. I reviewed with my Dad the links you sent me, all Torpey are known until Lance, Lance and Pauline we don't know them, the other spellings we don't know them either.

Yes, I can wait until Libraries are open over there again, thank you so much.

I was a member of Ancestry, the free trial period but maybe I never understood how it worked as I never found anything there.

I am glad you found as many of your ancestors as possible, that is awesome. Thanks for helping me find mine.

    Cheers for now

  • Hi Margot

No, I am not sure they went to the UK, I am just trying to search for all the possibilities to find out how they came here to Mexico.

I am learning Irish and a guy that is helping me with it through a facebook group, said that many people moved to the UK during the great famine.

An idea we had, was that they got here with Saint Patrick's battalion, but then that idea is also discarded as there is no clarity about it.

Apologies if that caused a confusion but thank you so much for still being there helping me on my research.

  • Hi Ale,

No, no confusion, it was just that there was one guy who matched in Lancashire, but after I sent the last message I traced him and he died in the UK.

Now this is interesting, "St Patrick's Battalion", I know a guy who is into that. He is not in the UK until year end, I will contact him and see what he knows.

Something to be going on with.... do you know these names?
    Carmen María Torpey Perez
    Hermenegildo Moreno González
    José Patricio Torpey
    William Torpey y Perafant
    Alfonso Torpey y Oropeza
    Jose Torpey Andrade
    Patricio Torpey Piedra
Elena Torpey Torpey Andrade de Zurita
    Maria Torpey de Contreri
    Guillermo Jose Torpey

Lets hope I get more information for you soon.

  • Hi Margot!

Thank you so much for all that you are doing.

All names are known people except for the last one, Guillermo.

The "St Patrick's Battalion", is just an idea we have, hopefully your contact can let us know if we are right or not about our guess.

    Thanks!
