Hello-  I'm relatively new to genealogy.  I am looking for information on Thomas Grimley and his wife Jane Hughes who emigrated from Armagh to Orange County New York around the time of the US Civil War.  I don't know how/where to begin.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

  • Hello, I am looking at unanswered queries and yours appears easy enough to have been answered. The first thing you have going for you is Grimley is not going to be a common name in Ireland. It is of great assistance to know the religion as we use church records prior to civil records commencing, for Prostestant marriages commenced in 1845 (nio sign of yours but 8 Grimley marriages recorded) all civil records started in 1864 if you have a parents name you can check for deaths etc https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

So I would start with what you know, they married, when, their age (often approximate from death certificate) is the parents names on any documentation.

In 1863/4 there was a land valusation done for all Ireland and Armagh was the dates previous, you will see 36 I think Grimleys on it in Armagh and 837 Hughes, all that is recorded is the head of house and whethe tenant or landlord, plus plot number and map, a tricky look but not important unless you want to visit.

If you get a religion and  date of birth or marriage (approximate is ok) There is a Tithe Applottment books for those holding over an acre of land and again only head of house.

Armagh is now in Northern Ireland (part of UK) and their records office is PRONI https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/campaigns/public-record-office-northern-ire…

If you know the address in Armagh you may find some family in the census of 1901 and 1911 free online here

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ Earlier census were destroyed but scraps remain.

So to start we need a name and where and a religion to search subscription sites but the Mormons have a free site that can be useful at Family Search

    https://www.familysearch.org/en/united-states/

There at subscription site for easier research and a mumber of local Facebook genealogy private groups based on county etc

Most migration records are on subscription site and there is no records for people travelling from Ireland to England etc as it was and is a free travel zone.

    Regards
