Hi;

Trying to find information on Hugh Mooney b. 1837 in Tipperary. He married Sarah Egan b. 1840 in Offaly. I found a Tithes Valuation for Cappakilleen with the tenants listed as Wm. Thomas Mooney and Edward Egan which leads me to assume Hugh was from this area. Hugh and Sarah emigrated to Ontario, Canada around 1865. They had 3 children who were baptised in Dunkerrin, Offaly and 8 more children after arriving to Canada.

Are there any Mooney's still in the area today?

Thank you.

Karen

  • Hi Karen,

    I'm in Cleveland - my GGG grandfather Michael left Roscrea in 1847 - I've found that the Mooney name is sparce in the area, even pre Famine, which is both good and bad for us. Good - when we find something on the surname in the area percentages would seem to indicate that there is a connection. I'm interested in talking further to see if we can't expand the web a bit and find connections that help us and others out - brothers, sisters, cousins, etc. My Michael (b 4/1825) had 3 sisters, Anne, Mary and Anastatia and his parents I believe were John Mooney and Judith Carroll.  There was some talk in the family tradition that he was from Knock Cross outside of Roscrea. He arrived in NYC 4/1847 and Cleveland 5/1848 where we have been ever since.

    Glad to talk whenever.

  • H Karen

    My name is Dolores Whyte and i am part of the Dunkerrin Reaching Out Team.

    i live near Cappakilleen and can confirm that there are Mooney's still farming there.    There are two families, one family still living there and the other family have moved about 2 miles from there.

    I hope that this might be of some help to you.  Please contact me again if you would like any further information.

  • Hi Dolores;

    Thank you ever so much for the information. So interesting to hear that there are Mooney's still in the area! I would love to be able to contact them somehow. I have a woman doing some research for me on Hugh Mooney, as I live in BC Canada, but she was unable to find any birth or baptism records in the area, not surprisingly really. I just found it too coincidental that a Mooney and Egan were tenants on the same land, and not be part of my ancestry.

    I would very much appreciate any more information, and would gladly pay you for your time and effort.

    My email is km0331@gmail.com

    Thanks again Dolores, and hope to hear from you again!

    Regards,

    Karen

  • I have just sent this email to the Reverend of the Moone parish,

    I am researching my Mooney Family tree and I am grasping at any straws that I can find. This link came to me by way of the online Irish Heritage Site.

    Can you tell me anything about 'Moone' and if you know any information about a Felix Mooney born about 1770  with  3 sons called Daniel b 1806, Peter b1809 and Patrick b1820 - 3 of them had the trade of the black smith. I warn you I was grasping at straws. Any help would be grateful. Thank you.

    Regards

  • Hi, I am new to the board and have connections to the Williams and Kyte families.

    I have amassed a big excel spreadsheet with all 19th c Williams mentions on it and find that a Mary Williams married Thomas Mooney, must have been 1860s or 70s.  I have these children (below).

    They may be useful if you are following naming patterns down through the families  who stayed behind.

    Mooney Ellen born 28/2/1868

    Mooney Susan born 22/11/1870

    Mooney Fredk born 7/3/1872

    Mooney Albert born 9/2/1874

    A John Williams married an Eliza and had a Susan about 1832 so this may have a link to the Susan in the Mooney family above. Mary Williams Mooney may be related to Frederick/h Williams who married a Coghlan and they also had a Susan about this time also 1869. (Just realised they have a Frederick as well. )

    Something to think about. Happy hunting.
