I'm wondering if there are any local historians that might have knowledge of twins, John and Patrick Hughes. Their Mother was Mary Jane McDermott who married Christopher Hughes in February 1886, the twins were born in December of the same year. For some reason their mother left the twins and went to Boston Massachusetts, where she married William Clark. Her name appears as HUGHES, MARY JANE (MCDERMOTT) and says, second marriage. A rumour was passed down the generations about the twins she left in County Meath. I'm pretty sure one of the twins, John was my grandfather.

Anyway, what i really want to know is, why did she not take them with her? What happened to Christopher Hughes, did he die, if so was it before she went to Boston, or was it before the twins were born?

Did she leave the twins with family, or was she not coping and they took them away? Where did she get the fair for her journey.

Thank you for reading my post.I live in the UK and have ill health so it is a bit difficult to find things out from here.

I am hoping that there is someone who can help me with this, i would be truly grateful.

Christopher died in 1891. I don't see the twins in the 1901 census nor do I see James Hughes brother of Christopher.

    See fourth record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

I can't answer any of the other questions related to Mary Jane McDermott.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you for replying so quickly. I do have that death record, but didn't want to use it until I was absolutely sure. I also have the twins birth record and m and Christopher's marriage record.

I think as far as I know that John Hughes is my grandfather.

John Hughes got deported for bootlegging from the USA in 1930 along with all the family. And on the way back John Hughes went to see his twin brother Patrick in Scotland, my mother remembered meeting him. So I have a feeling he is the same person and they got split up perhaps lived with different members of the family, or something else.

It would be really lovely to get all of those questions answered, but they were really rhetorical. I wouldn't expect anybody to have all of those answers, one day perhaps.

My mum's name was Mary, he could have call her after his mother.

I seem to have a lot of matches in my DNA for McDermott, so could someone with the same name, John Hughes, the same time, with a twin brother. Am I just trying to make it fit or could it be the same person?

I just want to say how kind you are, replying to my post.

    Thanks again

One of our volunteers, Shane Wilson, looked at this family and found that John and Patrick died at nine and ten days respectively.

See the third and fourth records at this link.

  • Oh no, i was getting quite fond of them. Well if they are looking down they will know they have been the centre of attention.

So it id back to the drawing board.

i wonder why i have so many McDermott's in my DNA then?

My dad's family was very large, but i only have a handful of matches, yet with McDermott i have nearly 100

    kind regards

  • Hi Roger,

I just wanted to say thank you, and to your friend for your hard work and bringing this to my attention. I had spent hours, days and weeks and months, looking for the information that sent me down the wrong path. I would have kept going as well! I have made my ancestors tree private, until i have sorted it out. I have always only put things on it that i could back up. But i was so very convinced, i should have waited.

So its back to the mystery of John Hughes.

    Thanks again

I'm glad Shane found the records which clarified what happened to the twins. All the best with your research!
