This is subsequent to the first post inquiring about the mythical Rathbone.  Here is the first hand proof that either Englishman can only write well but can't spell, or my ancestor James was not only illiterate but had a speech impediment to boot.  But then again, Rathbone vs. Rathbourn(e), there's not much in it, so let's put it down to his broad rural accent.  His good wife was Elizabeth (occasionally abridged to Eliza) Murphy also of county Kilkenny, from the parish of Gowran RC.

Bussorah Merchant passenger list

Now to set the record straight, James Delaney being illiterate only knew how say his name, so it was spelt Delany or Delaney quite interchangeably in the various records.  Joahanna was also mis-spelt, the original Irish record appears to be Joanna, but I'm still not sure about the Irish birth or baptism record is a child born to James and Eliza(beth). Eleanor was actually Ellen, and Mary who was also around 3 was apparently overlooked and never listed in this passenger list.  She of course grew up and had her 8 children in the new home land down unda.  In fact at this point in time it looks like the listing of Joanna to them is totally spurious and it ought be Mary.

From there it was just more of the same. Son John's record was mangled from birth to death, a daughter born Ann was registered as Elizabeth at death, etc. Oh the ways of the Irish.

  • Hi, thanks for your message.

It can sometimes be quite frustrating when information in the records is inconsistent. However, can you please clarify what your query is?

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Emma,

clarifying, I put this message up entitled the ice breaker under the category message rather than geneological message on the basis of there being no prior messages or that Kilkenny had not yet an established 'start' or whichever term is apt. For content I just briefly summarised the findings from my recent searching of James and Eliza, my ancestors from Templemartin, Kilkenny..  There's no query here.  My ancestral tree is pretty well constructed, findings from the related Irish search sites yielding a mixture of results.  I have also joined the 'team' at head office, helping extend and promote Ireland Reaching Out here in Au, across 'the pond'.
