Hi - I am hoping to find out some information about my grandfather, Michael Mahon. My mother indicated that he came to Boston from Loghrea, but I don't know too much about the man. I posted a msg on the Loghrea page, and was advised that I should try here. My grandfather passed away when my mum was quite young, and that would have been about 70 years ago. I would think that he was born @ late 1880's or ealy 90's - purely a guess on my part by doing the math on my Nana's age. The only other clues I have are that he had many siblings, fought in the war of independence and was at one time potentially in a British jail as a result.

Hi Kerry,
There are still decendants of two Mahon families living in Meelick. One of them is a Michael Mahon. I will speak to him and see if he can be of help. Have you accessed the 1901 and 1911 census at www.census.ie ?
The following is list of Mahon's found in various townalnds in Meelick is taken from Griffiths Valuation of 1855.

Hi Christy,
Thanks so much for your reply. I did access the census records, and for 1901 I found a Michael Mahon age 22 working as a servent in another family's household. (that is not something I have ever heard my family mention - so was curious) It could certainly be the same man, and perhaps something he didnt want to brag about to his children. I also found on the same census 2 Mahon girls in Loghrea at what I can only imagine is a school or orphanage? They are Eliza Mahon age 15 and Sara Mahon age 12. When I look for them on the 1911 Census I cannot find either of them. Their location on the 1901 census was 24 Moore Street Loughrea. Any thoughts on that?
Many thanks
Kerry

Hi Kerry,
There was an orphanage in Loughrea. So part of the answer to your query might lie there. Leave that with me until I check out which street it was on. It is very likely that you will have to follow up on extracting the information you require from the orphanage records yourself. I am not even sure at this point what order of nuns operated it.

Hi Kerry, An orphanage was opened in Loughrea by the Sisters of Mercy in 1862, followed by an Industrial School in 1864. The latter closed in 1967. It is listed as St. Bridgid?s Industrial School for Girls, Loughrea, Co. Galway.Often children were sent to industrial schools when parents died or were unable to look after them. I am not sure of the status or avaialbility of the records for either institution. Christy

Hi Christy,
Many thanks for that information. My sister told me that on one visit to Ireland with my parents, they went to the main Catholic church in Loughrea and someone showed them my Grandfather's baptism record. Do you know if there is a way for me to check on something like that remotely?

Kerry
