I have sketchy information on an ancestor from the Claregalway area.   My great great grandfather was John Daniel Duggan (born - . Nov 4, 1794 in and around summerfield)    His father's name was Henry, but we have no maternal information.

John  married Margaret Welsh (born may 1823 maybe near liscananaun, Co. Galway, parents were Richard Welsh and Margaret Faraher)  we think they were married around 1841)

She was young and he was no spring chicken   We don't have any information on Johns parents and siblings, other than his Father's name of Henry.   We also don't have any background on Margarets family either.

On another side of the family tree I have some Murphy's

A family: parents Malechi and Bridget (nee Sheridan) had 4 children  Michael, John, Phelim and Nellie)  are said to be from Waterview, Co. Galway.  Michael was born in April 1837 near Liscananaun  .   And married Mary Duggan we think around 1860-1862.    Mary was John and Margarets daughter  and born around 1846.

WE have no information on Bridget Sheridan or Malechi Murphy.

If anyone can add to this, or give me a interesting place to check any of this out.   Let me know.   My Husband and I will be in Ireland next month and have some time to kick around  some areas where our ancestors trod.

Thank  you in advance.

Regards,

Lynn Heller

  • Dear Lynn

There doesn't seem to be a marriage record in Lackagh Parish for John and Marageret nor any baptism records for any of their children.  In Lackagh the records start in 1842 so I thought maybe you might be lucky but it seems not : (. Keep in mind Duggan may have been Doogan or other spelling variants.

There are 2 Duggans listed in 1855 in Griffith's Valuation a Daniel and a Thomas see below, but there is no way to verify if either are your ancestor as there is no details on Griffith's re age etc

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…

You know the townland is Liscananaun which is a vital piece of info and even if you manage to find nothing else you could at the very least have a drive around the area when you get here. If you go onto the Ordnance Survey Ireland website you can actually pick the townland you want to view and zoom into the map and overlay the old OS map from the 1830s-1840s with the modern street map (using the options on the right hand side of that page and a little time to fiddle around with it). This means you can see all the changes in roads, disappearance of ring forts, increase in house building etc in any given area. I'm not sure how many graveyards are in Lackagh but you could also add a graveyard wallk to your agenda (weather depending!).

Hope you manage to find out more.

  • Thanks for the information... I like the sound of the graveyard walk, and doing the overlay of the ordance map.

If I find anything useful on either  I will post it.   I did find a Margaret Duggan(age 25 in the log)and infand Richard duggan listed as passengers on the Malvina leaving Galway in 1851.   That would be about the approximate ages, and it would be why they aren't in things past 1851....  I am having my geneology experts here let me know if that information matches any that they have.

Thanks for helping out.   I am looking forward to visiting the area next month.

  • Hello - all those names you have listed are very familiar in my mother's family. She is Nellie Duggan by birth, born to Margaret Duggan nee Duggan and Henry Duggan (Yep - they were both Duggans). One of my cousins has a book that lists them all - they are still in Galway. We could find out more if you are still interested.

My mother (who is the last living of her siblings and up in her 80's) talks about some family members who went to the USA.
