I have been investigating my grandmother's family the Irwins in Ireland for a while. My great grandfather James Irwin was born in Cuilmore Leitrim in 1874.  He was married to Mary Ann Farrell (1879).  They left for Glasgow Scotland in the 1890s so I do not know if there still Irwins in that area.  I do know that James was the son of Michael Irwin (1842) and Susan McCarten (1838).  I had been stuck at this point for a while until I discovered a death record for James Irwin in Clonboyher.  The death was reported by his son Michael Irwin of Cuilmore.  This must be my great grandfather's father.  I am assuming that Clonboyher is the same as Cloonboygher which is near Cuilmore.  James was 78 years old at the time of death and the date is 1889 so he would have been born approximately 1811.  So far all of the Irwins are Roman Catholic.  I then found a record in the 1821 Census of Clonbyher.  There is a family of Irwins with a son who is names James and is 10 years old a the time which wwould be a match.  The family denomination is listed as Churh of Ireland.  The parents are James and Rebecca Irwin.  Is is safe to assume these people are related to me.  Is it possible that James may have converted to Catholicism, possibly for marriage.  Is there any way to find a conversion record?

I have also found a birth record for a Michael Irwin in Clonboyer in 1852 to James Irwin and Bridget (Beaty) Irwin.  I believe this is a match.

Again I have hit a dead end.  I was hoping that some might be able to give some insight into this story.  Are my assumptions about locations correct?  Does anyone know of Irwins still in the area. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

George

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you clarify where you located the 1821 census record for the Irwins? I checked the National Archives census site www.census.nationalarchives.ie and they did not list any 1821 census records for Co. Leitrim.

I checked Google Maps and Cloonboygher and Cuilmore are about six kilometers apart.

The 1852 baptismal record for Michael Irwin in Carrigallen RC would be for your ancestor.

I found a few records which you may already have. The first two links are the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family. The 1911 census shows four children which would be Mary, Catherine James and afourth sibling. I also located the 1919 and 1933 death records for Susan and Michael.

Not sure about current Irwins in the area.

Let me know what questions you have.

    Roger,

Thank you for your reply.  I found the 1821 Census for Lietrim on the RootsIreland website. I have attached a copy of the record.

  • Roger,

I did not have the death record of my great grandfather.  I did not know when he died.

    Thank you very much.

Thanks. I subscribe to Roots but had not picked up on the 1821 census being included on their data base for Co. Leitrim.
