I am looking for the parents of Isabella Gilliland born 1811 in Shettleston, Lanark, Scotland but dies in Portrush 15/8/1893. She is buried in Agherton Cemetery. She was married to Abraham John Kerr. They farmed at Roselick.

  • I had a look at the Scotlandspeople site. As far as I can tell there are no Church of Scotland (ie Presbyterian) parish records for Shettleston around 1811. (As with Ireland, there are many gaps in early Scottish church records).  That will make finding Isabella’s baptism difficult, if not impossible.

  • Hi Elwyn,

Could I add a question? She was married to Abraham John Kerr (b1810 Shettleston) who was son of Hugh Kerr and Mary Baille

Would that info add any light?

    Regards

    Jon

  • Jon,

No sorry can’t really add anything. Her death was reported in the Coleraine Chronicle of 19.8.1893 but it makes no mention of her parents or origins.

Abraham & Isabella look to have married before the start of statutory registration (1845 in Ireland & 1855 in Scotland) and so the marriage record is unlikely to contain parents names.

I see Hugh Kerr in Roselick in the 1828 tithes but no Gillilands farming in the parish then. Perhaps Isabella’s family were Scottish?

Hugh Kerr in the 1831 census. 2 males & 3 females in his household:
