ISO: Lawless/Higgins

Looking for information on my 3rd great grandparents LOUGHLAN LAWLESS and MARGARET HIGGINS. Married 28 Nov 1867, Parish Aglish, County Waterford. Dispensation from banns. Margaret was from Clonkirdine. Margaret's father was PATRICK HIGGINS. Loughlan's father was STEPHEN LAWLESS.

About 2 days after the marriage, Loughlan boarded a ship in Cobh for USA. Margaret followed about a year later.

I'm trying to find out where the Lawless family was from in Ireland. Does anyone have suggestions as to what document sets I should look in?

thank you!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

As you know from the civil marriage record, Loughlan was a coachman, his father was Stephen and Loughlan's residence at marriage was Killeagh Co. Cork.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and there was no Loughlan Lawless baptismal records anywhere in Ireland and no Stephen Lawless marriage record anywhere in Ireland in the first halft of the 19th century. I also checked on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie but found no records.

There were only three Stephen Lawless Griffiths Valuation records in Ireland: Whistlemount townland Liscartan civil parish Co. Meath    Menlough in Oranmore parish in Co. Galway   Largan townland Donagh Patrick civil parish Co. Galway

There are three Stephen Lawless death index records on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  1866 1868 1876 all in Co. Galway and I assume two of the three records relate to the two Stephen Lawless Griffiths records above.

You may want to add Loughlan to our XO Chronicles site https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

thank you so much! I did NOT know that Loughlan was a coachman or that he resided in Killeagh, County Cork! This information is not on the copy of the marriage certificate that I have. Can you tell me where you saw this document? I would like to obtain a copy.

The Killeagh makes sense as I just found Margaret's baptismal record stating Diocese Cloyne, Parish Killeagh [Ardaugh + Dangan], so I will pursue that, but have little hope since you, who are much more familiar with Irish records, found little. But, hey, it's more than I had a couple days ago and I'm very thankful!

I think Margaret had a sister Bridget, and a brother Patrick.

Maybe a family member will see this and be able to help. I was going to add Loughlan to the site, but I know so little info about him. I will try adding him him with the Parish of Killeagh. It's just a guess, but all I have right now.

    thank you again

  • third record on the page  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1867/11515/8235122.pdf

You mention finding Margaret's baptismal record in Killeagh. Was her mother Catherine Fitzgerald?  Looks like there were at least four siblings.

The records were on the subscription site Roots Ireland. There were five siblings not four.

  • You are a treasure Roger, thank you so much! You know, my husband, daughter and I went on a 'once in a lifetime' cruise last year and stopped in Cobh. Little did I know how close I was!! Hope to get back there one day!

Maybe not all of the Higgins' went to America. What a treat it would be to find relatives still living in the area!

    thank you again!!
