James Ahern shows up on the 1831 Tithe Defaulters List for the County of Cork. I had a suspicion that he might be the father of my ancestor Johanna Ahern, born 1805, who married Patrick Collins of Mullarie, born 1802. Among other clues,  there is a Johanna McCarty, widow, who may be her maternal grandmother who is a neighbour in that list. Michael Collins, the father of Patrick, is listed at Mullarie, or Mullaria also as a  Tithe Defaulter.

Today I noticed a much better clue as I was investigating the Aherns of Killeagh for the ppossibility of relation. The witnesses to their wedding at Killeagh, 14 September 1828, were James Flanagan and John Kearney, in that order. John Kearney lived on the townland of Clonpriest ! The only Flanagans I can find are in Killeagh itself.

This has to be her family I think. Would be interested in a second opinion from a local.

There is a John Ahern at Clonpriest too, but they named their second son James (and first Michael), so I prefer James  as the likely father.

    Dear O'Maoilchonaire,

Sorry for the delay in answering your query, however on checking for the marriage date, I came across a different date - it has limited information as it does'nt state an address - the later the marriages the more information they have.

Do you have any further information as the above is very limited.

    See the marriage record below

  • Dear O'Maoilchonaire,

Was looking through your query again -  do you have a family tree already done in Ancestry or in a word doc?   From what you have written above you are surmising on names and addresses - it could be all of them or it could be none of them.  If you could give me names, addresses etc it would be a better way to try and get a connection with your ancestors. - my email is:  liph.irwin77@gmail.com and I will do my best to find a link for you.

    kind regards
