My Great Grandfather James Patrick Carroll emigrated to Australia in 1859. He was born in 1839 to James and Catherine(Maher) Carroll and came from Templemore area, Parish of Drom and Inch Diocese of Cashel and Emly. His parents names were on his death certificate but we have no other information. Any hints for finding out more about the family?

Birth of James to Batt Carroll ( nickname?) and Catherine Maher, sponsers are William Dooly and Ellen Egan, birth November 1838, I think the area is Clonlismullen

Clarehi,
Are you sure James' father's name is James? The birth record Eileen shared I think shows the father's name as Patt or Patrick. I found a marriage record for Patrick Carroll and Catherine Maher on RootsIreland (paid subscription). They were married in Drom, Feb. 5, 1825.

Thank you both for your information - it’s wonderful! When James died in 1912 he was a widower and several of his children had also died so whoever gave the information was mistaken. That’s made it hard finding accurate records. I am so grateful for your help. I’ve taken a months subscription to Roots Ireland and will try to gather information on my Maguire and Brennan ancestors. Maguires will be difficult as they are from Ballyconnell Cavan and there are very few records available from there. Never mind I’ll keep searching.
