I am researching James Duggan of Cork, who was my husband's 2nd great grandfather.  I can't find a birth or parentage for him.

He married Margaret Barry 1856 in Cloyne, and from his daughter, Margaret's marriage registration in 1890 he was a butcher and deceased.  I believe he married again to Elizabeth nk, and Elizabeth's death registration (1899) shows him as a butcher again and deceased. He died at 7Middleton Street, Queenstown with his son present at his death.

If anyone can help with his birth and parentage I would be very grateful. Or indeed any other information on him would be wonderful.

Thank you

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the susbcription site Roots Ireland from 1829-1839 and there are no James Duggan baptismal records in Cloyne parish so likely he was baptized in another parish. By the way, there were 14 James Duggan records in parishes in the north and east of Cork. What was the name of his eldest son and possibly we can identify some possible records based on the premise that James named his first son after his father.

  • As far as I know his eldest son was John but I have no birth date for him. He had 3 daughters (that I know of) Margaret (my husband's great Grandmother who married William Francis Palmer, (1864-1927)), Catherine born 1866 and Mary Anne born 1869 and died the same year. I think James was born in Queenstown.

The fact that there are so many James in the area is very confusing and not knowing the area makes it worse. His parents may have been Patrick Duggan and Susannah (Susan) Fawcett, but I need to prove this parentage, but if these are the right parents, Susannah must have been very young when she had him, and they seem to have moved to Canada in the early 1840's. James did not go to Canada, so if I do have the correct parents (and DNA points to this possibility) why did they leave him behind and who did they leave him with.

Thank you so much for the time you are spending on this.
