James was born in Armagh in about 1814. He emigrated to Scotland as a young man. He was a weaver and probably looking for work. He married Mary Anne Jane Burns on the 22nd March 1835 in Dundee, Angus, at the age of about 21 yrs (Scotland, Select Marriages, 1561-1910). They lived in Dundee and had 9 children from 1836 to 1856 (John, James, Rose Ann, Thomas, Margaret,Catherine, Ellen, Maria, William) and emigrated to Queensland, Australia on the 'Montmorency' arriving in Brisbane on the 16 October 1860. I would like to find out who his parents were and where exactly he was born etcetera.

  • Peter,

Did James & Mary Ann have a child born in Scotland in 1855? 1855 was the first year of statutory birth registration in Scotland, and in that year only a lot of extra information was recorded on birth certificates, including where and when the parents were born. (A lot was dropped after 1855 as being too time consuming). So if there’s an 1855 birth certificate it should tell you where James was born. Let us know, together with James’s denomination, and I’ll advise you what records exist in Armagh and how to access them. (There’s a fair chance there are no records that far back but I won’t know till we establish where he was born. It’s a large county with a lot of churches).

  • Hi Elwyn

I don't have any births for 1855. The nearest is 1856. However on James O'Connor's wife Mary Ann Jane's DC 12th June 1890, Brisbane Queensland, there are 6 offspring surviving and 6 deceased. The informants on the DC were William and Maria O'Connor two of her offspring. On arrival in Queensland on 16th Oct 1860 there were 9 offspring so there could have been a birth in 1855 that I have missed. James was a Catholic. The ages of her offspring given on the DC don't tally with the birth dates that I have for them so as per usual the information given on the DC is not reliable! The children were baptised in St Andrews church in Dundee. I have some of the records for births and baptisms.

    Regards, Peter

  • Peter,

The was a William Connor born in Dundee 2nd District in 1855 - GROS ref 282/2 123. That’s the only Connor/ O’Connor birth in Dundee that year that I can see. Might be worth looking at.

Here’s a link to a website listing all the RC parishes in Co Armagh:

Most of them don’t have records for c 1814. Armagh city does. I didn’t check them all, but there may some more.  The RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

But if James comes from a parish that wasn’t keeping records in 1814, there’s no easy way around that.

  • Thanks Elwyn, I will follow up those leads. I also have some Irish Parish records but they are almost illegible.

  • The William recorded in 1855 had different parents according to the record.
