I posted this message in the general Ireland group and a volunteer recommended that I post on the Ulster/ Donegal board to see what information you can come up with.

Looking for confirmation or any information on where my ancestors came from in Ireland and their parents, siblings, etc.  Thank you so much for any help.  This is a major brick wall in my tree.

James Thomas McLaughlin is my 2nd great grandfather.  Born about March  1865 in Ireland.  Died about 1903 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.  According to the 1900 Illinois United States Census he arrived to America in 1870 at about the age of 5.  About 1880 he married Bridget Granahan also from Ireland (my 2nd great grandmother).

Bridget Granahan or Granaghan Born about August 1860 in Ireland.  Died about 1901 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA (not sure of her death date).  According to the 1900 Illinois United States Census she arrived to America about 1873 at about the age of 13.

Thier children that I know of:

Hugh Thomas McLaughlin (my great grandfather).  Born 28 Nov 1884 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.  Died 1 Sep 1953 in Chicago, Cook, County, Illinois, USA.  Married Helen Santry.  Born 4 Sep 1890 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.  Died 27 Nov 1970 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.

Edward McLaughlin (my great grand uncle).  Born 16 Jul 1895 in Donegal, Ireland According to the United States WWI Draft Registration Card and his wife is listed as Mary.  Died 8 Oct 1918 in Chciago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.

Thank you ~ Karen

There?s 2 Edward McLaughlin births in Donegal in 1895 but neither was in July. Both were in the Inishowen peninsula where the name McLaughlin (and variations) is very common. (I think they are descendants of Scots from the Western Isles who settled there in the 1500s and 1600s).

You best bet would be to search the 1901 census for him if you can get his parents names from somewhere eg a marriage or death certificate.

  • Thank you for your help!  I just love Ireland Reaching Out, so helpful!!!  Edward's father is James Thomas McLaughlin my 2nd great grandfather, his mother is Bridget Granahan or Granaghan.  And yes I do believe there is Scottish blood in my family.  Through the years they (my Irish family/ancestors) always said they were "Scots Irish".   Trying to make the connections is not an easy task.

This is what I have on Edward from The Cook County, Illinois Death Index 1878-1972
