What religion was your Tate family? I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland but there was no record for Jane near 1812. There were Tate records in the Granard C of I records after 1812 but no Tate records in the Granard RC parish. The surname Tuite is also found in Granard.

Granard C of I records start in 1820.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I have wondered if there is a variation in spelling of the surname as 'Tate' isn't exactly an Irish name. The surname first appears for Jane as Jane Tate in an Irish gaol listing, prior to her transportation as a convict to Australia in 1832.

All court/ convict muster documents show her as being born in Granard, County Longford around 1812 - 1813.  I think she may have been born between 15 June and 11 Sept 1812. She is listed as a Roman Catholic.

I think Tate is a variation as I have been unable to find any Tates in my searching.

    Regards

  • Roger,

Also variation could be Teate as there was a Jane Teate married in Granard in 1882. After my Jane Tate of interest gained her Certificate of Freedom in 1839 she used the alias Murphy. I have found basic information in ancestry.com showing a Jane Tate Smurphet ( Murphy alias could be derived from this)  but no birth date or born where details. I also wonder if her surname could have been this.

    Cheers
