Hi Its 5 years since I last posted so heres hoping  ! Have been trying to trace back to my husbands irish roots.

Thomas Brassell was born in 1832 - says on his death certificate born in Ireland.(he died in South Africa 1902.)

The earliest document we have is a marriage certificate in 1855 at St Georges Catholic Church in Surrey,London.

He married Mary Kennelly (daughter of Thomas Kennelly and Nora Roach)who was born in Middlesex,UK 1829. She  died in South Africa 1895.

His father John Brassell was deceased at the time.

They then had a son Thomas Jnr Brassell  1858- no trace of where he was born says UK .

Thomas Snr immigrated to Australia 1858 on the Tricolor

Mother and son immigrated to Australia 1860 on the Bonadventure.

They had a son Michael in Australia 1861 who married Charlotte Holl - no children

They then had a daughter Mary 1865 in New Zealand  m James Cronin  - 4 children

They then had Walter John Brassell (my husbands grandfather) 1870 in New Zealand -m Isobel Home(daughter of William and Ellen Home from Duns Scotland

They had 3 children Terence,James, and Gerald(My husbands father)

In 1882 the family immigrated from New Zealand to South Africa aboard the Northumberland

They were one of may families chasing the gold !

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

I went back and looked at our older messages and it has been six years since you last posted. Here is the last message  https://irelandxo.com/ireland/waterford/message-board/brassell

Back then you were focusing on Co. Waterford. I did not have a Roots Ireland subscription at the time, but I did know they had a Thomas Brazil baptismal record in Co. Waterford in 1832. I now have a subscription and below is a transcription of the record and it does show Thomas with a father John. There are no other Thomas Brazil records in 1832. There was an 1834 Record in Co. Kerry and an 1835 record in Co. Kilkenny. The key piece of info would be his mother's maiden name.

Do you think this is the correct record?

  • The parish records for Stradbally in County Waterford which are available online go all the way back to 1805, so if that turns out to be the right place you may be able to find many of the people you mentioned, plus perhaps an earlier generation or two, although you may have to search through a number of pages (taking the years you have with a grain of salt, since people back then were often vague about exactly when they were born).  The records can be accessed here:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1093

If you find a baptismal record in the parish register, it will often indicate the name of the townland where the fanily lived, so that might enable you to pinpoint more precisely where your ancestors were from.

There is more information about the civil parish of Stradbally in Wateford at this link:  https://www.townlands.ie/waterford/stradbally2/  The civil parish boundaries were not always the same as those of the local Catholic parish, but in this case it looks as thoogh they're mostly the same.  You'll see there a list of hte townlands in the parish, with links to more info about each of them.
