I'd like to research Johanna Leary who Griffith's Valuation (1852 printing) shows as both a Tenant and a Landlord in the Sranaviddoge townland  -  Cork | Carbery, East (West Division) | Bandon | Murragh

She may be a relative as I have ancestors from that townland but I'm mostly just intrigued by a female landlord - that seems uncommon for the time.  I have no corroborating information about Johanna and her name is frustratingly common of course.  1852 is a long time prior to the 1901 Census and after the 1826 one (when it finally becomes open) so not likely to help either.

Can you suggest anything to get me started?

  • Dan, I went to GV to see what you can see.

    this one............
    Griffith's Valuation (askaboutireland.ie)

She may have rented out land to others. There are two names.

Look at the different Position on page the ref number are 14.

  • It looks like Johanna's landlord was the Duke of Devonshire.  She herself rented small parcels to two other people.

  • Thanks Margot and Patricia, that is helpful to have confirmed.

What I am wondering is can I find out more about that particular Johanna Leary?  Is there more I can know than what is on the Griffith's Valuation transcript and the image of the original record?  For example, can I connect her to a family.

Interestingly I am reasonably sure that townland is the one of my ancestor Denis Leary who married Ellen Hallahane in February, 1858 in Murragh. They had a child (Patrick) baptised in March, 1859.  He emegrated to Australia in his 30s.  Denis and Ellen,  two years later,  had a girl-child also called Johanna baptised as from Scrahan (Sranaviddoge).  Denis's records consistently give his role as 'farmer' he died in 1907 I think.  I have not found a Denis Leary in that townland on GV however.

  • As you may know, Murragh is a civil parish AND a townland.  Sranaviddoge borders on Murragh townland, to the north.

The fact that Denis Leary named his first daughter Johanna is a strong indication that his mother was also called Johanna.

  • Hi, If you go to irishgenealogy.ie and search Church Records, you will see an 1835 baptism for a Denis Leary in Murragh. Parents: Johanna Sweeney and Denis Leary.  There's at least one other child listed for them.

Note the name Johanna can also be Hannah, Anna, Ann, Honor, Honora.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Thanks Patricia - that is a real treat for me!

I'd done several searches and been repelled by the large number of possible records I found. Then came the challenge of not knowing which ones to disregard and which were possibles. You seem to have nailed it.

In the tradition of teaching a hungry man to fish, can you tell me how you structured your  irishgenealogy.ie  search to land on that result?

    Again, go raibh maith agat.
