I am searching for the parish or location where my ancestor John Byrne was born. He ended up in Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio. On his cemetery records, his parents are listed as Thomas and Ellen, and his birthplace as Wexford. His birth year varies in the records between 1828-1830. He was married to Mary Burkett in 1856 at a catholic church in Hamilton County.
His children in order of birth were Nellie/Ellen, James L, Thomas J, and Mary. John's wife's parents were named James and Joanna (hence the name of James L).

My dad has done his autosomal DNA and has lots of leads with Byrne ties to Wicklow and Wexford. One of his cousins that has the Byrne male line has also done Y-DNA which confirms that it is the line that leads back to Wexford. I have only found two branches that seem close enough to John to be of real interest. One is Elizabeth Byrne White b 1800 that is from Coolafancy (Crosspatrick) according to the trees, and the other is Mary Byrne Kinsella b 1827 of Killanerin. These two parishes are fairly close together geographically, which is encouraging as to finding a location for John and his parents.
There is another match with that goes back to Anne Byrne O'Gorman of Kilavaney, also nearby. Yet another with roots in Tomacork. So it seems to be the right region, at the very least.
I would be grateful for any help in focusing my search or finding pertinent information.
regards,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I have checked the records from the subscription site www.rootsireland.ie and there is a baptism listed for a John Byrne but mother is Mary and not Ellen (unless her full name was Mary Ellen)
John Byrne
Baptised 23 January 1830
Place of baptism Kilanerin co.Wexford
Home address was Gorey co. Wexford
Father Thomas Byrne
Mother Mary Fitzsimons
Sponsors James Connell & Elizabeth Delany
It might be worth looking in to this
Regards,
Anne Marie

Andrea:
Like Anne-Marie, I looked at Roots Ireland which only has records for 15 of the 48 RC parishes in Wexford. They do have records forKilanerin parish but do not have records for Tomacork. As Anne-Marie pointed out no John Byrne records with Thomas and Ellen as parents which would seem to rule out Kilanerin. I then went to FindMyPast.ie which has records for all of the Wexford parishes that go back to the 1828-1830 timeframe but unfortunately, I could not find a record for your John Byrne with parents Thomas and Ellen and there were many records to review including 21 in Tomacork (john Byrne was very popular in Wexford). There were records with Thomas as the father but not with a mother Ellen.
Is there any way you can find the maiden name for Ellen.?

Thank you both for your kind replies. I have been unable to find any documentation for John's mother's maiden name. I do have four more distant matches with the Fitzsimons name in the DNA, but not anything to conclusively rule out a coincidence.

Hi Donna, and nice to hear from you. I have you in my tree already, and my dad matches your one brother and niece on Ancestry, and your other brother and a sister on FamilyTreeDNA. DNA has been helpful in putting some pieces together, but I have yet to conclusively find a birth record. There is a probable older sister named Mary Byrne Kinsella that ended up in Kentucky. Our side has lots of matches to her descendents. There is a probable youngest sister named Ellen Byrne O'Donnell, whose descendants also match on Ancestry and who believe the family emigrated from Clone near Enniscorthy in Wexford. They went to New Orleans and then up the Mississippi to St. Louis. Supposedly the father died young, the youngest daughter ended up in a childrens' home, and the mother in a poorhouse. Some siblings stayed in New Orleans and some went to Cincinnati, including John. The older sister in KY and Cincinnati OH are both locations up the Ohio river from St. Louis. I have yet to find anything to conclusively tie John to the family of Thomas and Ellen Byrne in Clone, but it is a possibility. There is also an Elizabeth Byrne White that was a possible sister to Thomas, but I have not found documentation yet, just DNA matches. I am yet to find any conclusive documents to back up the DNA matches, but hoping some clues will eventually surface.

Andrea wow! Well we thought Thomas snd Ellen were the names of Johns parents
-
can you share who your father is and how is related to John Byrne?
Thanks!
Donna

Hi,
Thomas and Ellen were the parents of John, but it is hard to tie them conclusively to a specific Thomas and Ellen as they are common names. One would need more corroborating information.
If you have e-mail I can send you more info.
