I have just discovered this site and I am wondering if you can assit me find my distant relatives in Ireland. I believe I am a descendant of James Dalton who was born in Galbally and Aherlow in 1803. He married Johanna Fraher on July 19 1832 in Galbally and Aherlow. I know they had two sons Patrick 1837-1917 and Thomas 1840-1896. Both of these died in Australia. They may also have had a daughter Catherine born in 1837 and a son John. I will be visiting Ireland next month and plan to spend a couple of days in Galbally around 25 Sept.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi John,
Are you related to Tom Dalton who was connected to the Emus Rugby Club in Orange in the sixties? I had a season out there in 1968 - I'm an Aussie but volunteer on the site.
www.rootsireland.ie/ has JAMES Dalton as the groom in the wedding record to Johanna Fraher & also as the father of Patrick, Thomas, Catherine & another with no name given - must have been the John you mentioned:

Roman CatholicThe marriage record is disappointingly brief - no parents' names or home addresses!
I checked the Irish phone book (118.ie/) & there are no Daltons in Galbally but there are 4 in Aherlow.
The Tithe Applotments (free at titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 4 Daltons in Galbally in 1830:
John Townland Ballinamona
Thomas DUNTRYLEAGUE Townland (coincidence!)
James also Duntryleague
Michael Barnagurraha
You might want to familiarise yourself with the Irish naming pattern if you haven't already done so, in order to see how these James and John might fit with the names in the baptisms above.
- 1st son was named after the father’s father
- 2nd son was named after the mother’s father
- 3rd son was named after the father
- 4th son was named after the father’s eldest brother
- 1st daughter was named after the mother’s mother
- 2nd daughter was named after the father’s mother
- 3rd daughter was named after the mother
- 4th daughter was named after the mother’s eldest sister
There are no Daltons in the irish Censuses of 1841 or 51 (www.census.nationalarchives.ie/)
Griffiths Valuation (free at www.askaboutireland.ie/) has 3 Daltons - Michael, Margaret & Patrick in Galbally in 1852; the Tithe & Griffiths info might give you some areas to visit during your stay. I'm just back from Limerick - they won the Hurling final for the first time in 45 years so it's a happy county!
rootsireland (subscription site) has Civil Parish records of deaths of Daltons in Galbally from 1864 but not one of the mentions a graveyard!
Have a great trip!

Thanks for this info but I have much of it. The Irish naming pattern is of interest. It is the James Dalton and Johanna Fraher connection which has me stumped.
No I don't think I am related to the Tom Dalton from Emus. I am originally from Melbourne and have lived in Orange for about 20 years. There could be a relationship with the Orange Daltons as they originated from Duntryleague which is very close to where my relatives lived or at least as far as my reseach shows.
Thanks for your help. I will try and track down the 4 Daltons in Aherlow they may have some information which might help.

Hi John,
James Dalton and Johanna Fraher are my 3x great grandparents!
Their son Patrick married Honora Lynch in Ballarat in 1858.
Their son Michael married Mary Hehir in Wooroonooke,Victoria in 1890.
Their daughter Nora Christina married Edward Griffin in 1932 in Flemington.
Edward and Nora are my grandparents.
Did you find out anything more about James and Johanna?
Are there any living Dalton relatives in Limerick?
I would greatly appreciate any further information you might have on the Dalton/Fraher family.
Kind regards,
Frank Griffin.Frank Griffin

Wow Frank this is exciting. You are the only person I am aware of on the Dalton side of my family. My grandfather was Thomas Francis Dalton brother of your Grandmother Nora. I have no knowledge of any of my grandfather's siblings except James (b 1891 d 1974) who I did meet several times as a young teeager. I am originally from Melbourne but now live in Orange NSW. i would to make contact and discuss our family and history. My Email adress is johnandleonedalton@bigpond.com and phone is 0488040350. Would love to chat.
