Hi!  I am trying to locate information about my great-great grandparents, their siblings and their parents.

(1) John Farley who was born in County Cork around 1843-45.  He immigrated to USA around 1869 and was employed as a teamster in Paterson, NJ, USA.  He was Catholic. I don't have any information about his Irish parents or siblings.

He married (2) Mary Regan in the Paterson, NJ, USA in 1871.  Rumor has it she was also born in County Cork, immigrated to the USA around 1869, and was Catholic.  Mary's parents were Cornelius and Honora Regan.  Mary had a brother named Daniel Regan (who also came to USA) and possibly other siblings.... Ellen Regan and Michael Regan who also immigrated to USA.

I have common DNA with Mary, Daniel, Ellen and Michael Regan's descendants so we MUST be related somehow.

I have a distant cousin here is USA who is also sincerely interested in this family history and may be contacting you about these same family too!

Any information you can share with us is GREATLY appreciated.  I will be visiting Ireland at the end of March and I would welcome any areas you would recommend me visiting.

Thanks!  Maureen

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Not having much luck looking for Mary regan. I searched on www.irishgenealogy.ie and Roots Ireland and did not find a Mary Regan with parents Cornelius and Honor. On Roots I extedned the search for all of Ireland. There are a couple possiblities down in Schull parish but the mother's names were Ellen or Anne. Knowing Honor's maiden name will be very helpful.

John Farley is going to be difficult since you don't have parents names. There are John Farrell records but no John Farley so far.

For both Mary and John, it is possible they were from another county but left from Co. Cork for America.

Have you located a death record for either Mary or John?

    Let me know.

  • Thank yiou so much for your time, Roger!

Re:  John Farley (and Mary Farley)  I do not have a copy of John or Mary's death certificate although I can get one from the State of NJ.  Although they are not near as helpful or quick as you and way more expensive :-(   I will order them and update you as I find out.  I have no documentation saying they are from County Cork.  This is just a rumor passed down from my grandmother.

Re:  Cornelius and Honora Regan.... or the parents of Mary and Daniel and/or Ellen and/or Michael.  We are quite sure that Mary and Daniel are brother and sister.  And Ellen and Michael may be cousins or their siblings.  I listed below what I have/know.  Maybe one of the following parent choices will be the right one.

Option A - Cornelius Regan and Honora Leary of East Schull, Schull, Cork and Ross baptized a Daniel on 19 Dec 1838.  Can you also see if they had children named Mary, born Aug 1845, Ellen  and Michael?,  (Cornelius and Honora Regan are listed as parents of Daniel and Mary on their marriage certificates.)

If Ellen and Michael are not children of the Cornelius and Honora Leary Regan, maybe one of these parents listed below could be related to Cornelius or Honora making Ellen and Michael cousins of Mary and Daniel.

Option B -  Michael Regan and Honora McCarthy of Cork and Ross who baptized an Ellen in May of 1838..

Option C - Cornelius Regan and Hanora McCarthy a DNA matched descendant lists them as Michael's  parents.

Option D - Mary Cahalane (transcribed from handwriting so name could be something similar) and David Regan baptized an Ellen Regan in Diocese or Cork and Ross on 23 Jan 1835.

***Please note that  I share DNA with the descendants of Ellen, Mary, Daniel and Michael.  So we are looking for a sister/brother or cousin connection between all 4****

I hope this doesn't sound too confusing.   Please let me know if I need to clarify further.  Thanks so much!  Maureen

  • Hi Maureen,

The 1871 Marriage record in New Jersey lists John Farley's parents as Edward & Mary.

There is a very bad image for a Joen / John Farly in County Tyrone born October 1845 to Edward Farly and Mary Hughes. 3rd Record from top, page on right.

Cornelius and Honora married in Schull East on February 2, 1823. They had a number of children including a Mary in 1824. See below.  Also Denis 1826 Ellen 1828 Michael 1830 John 1836 Daniel 1838 Catherine 1844 One possibility is that the 1824 Mary died young and they had a later child Mary and the record does not show up on www.irishgenealogy.ie  Here is the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0094  maybe you can scan the register.

  • Oh, WOW, Roger, thanks for this great info! This is the link between the siblings that we were looking for. I am the other "distant relative" that Maureen referenced above. I am in Ellen's line (b; 1828). Using the information that you gave me, I have found her exact baptismal record and have copied it. THANK YOU!

Also, THANK YOU for the date of marriage (Feb. 2, 1923) of Cornelius Regan and Honora Leary. In that particular record, there are two names listed underneath: Denis Regan and Denis Leary. Are those the DAD'S names of these two individuals?

I would like to find the date of birth of both Cornelius Regan and Honora Leary. Would you be able to help me with that?

    Thank you again!

  • I would also like to know the date of death, and burial location of Cornelius Regan and Honora Leary, if that information is available. Thank you! Cindy

  • Cindy/Maureen:

The two Denis' on the marriage records were witnesses and likely brothers to the bride and groom. The Schull records start in October 1807  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0094  I did not see a Cornelius Regan or Honora Leary baptismal record in Schull around 1807-1809 and also even if born in late 1807, they would be 15 at marriage. Not likely

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. I did locate an 1875 index record which is a possibility. Images of death records start in 1878 but the older records e.g. 1875 should be placed online in the next year. Other wise you have to write to the GRO. Did not see a record for Honora.

  • Thanks so much, Roger!

We are still looking for the birth of another Mary (around 1844) to Cornelius Regan and Honora Leary. I found a baptismal record (for Mary Regan) in East Schull for November 16, 1844 but no parents are listed. I am having difficulty reading and interpreting that entry. Would you be able to take a look at that entry and let me know what it means?

Do you show any death records for the first Mary (born in 1824)? I am wondering if she died as a child and then another child was named Mary.

    Thank you.

  • Cindy:

That is a record of an adult named Mary Regan being received into the church in the presence of two witnesses.

  • Roger, Can you please tell me (from the information above) the exact name of the church or parish Where Cornelius & Honora were married and where each of the children were baptized. When I look online, I see a St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schull, and there is a very old (decrepit) church south of the town. Are these two the correct places, should I desire to visit them? Thanks. Cindy
