Hi Michelle,

Given the proximity of Ballykeeran townland (Lickerrig-Carrabane) to Kiltulla, the Flannery family there may be connected. They appear to be the only Flannery family in Kilconierin-Lickerrig-Clostoken at any time. An earlier Flannery family were based in Rathgorgin (Kilconierin) at the time of the 1821 census, but were not listed there by 1825.

I've only just joined "Ireland Reaching Out "this morning and I'm not quite sure how to comment. 

But this is for you, Michelle, and you, "Sakdolan" re your FLANNERY and MANNION. I haven't had a chance to read the comments yet...I just saw familiar places and names...and wrote my little piece.

My Great Great Grandfather was John MANNION.

He was born about 1829. He came from Esker and/or Gloves.

I am a descendant of one of John MANNION's wives,  Mary MOGAN.

Mary MOGAN was from Athenry.

She died about 2 years after her second child, Margaret MANNION, my Great Grandmother was born. Margaret MANNION was born about 1865.

Margaret MANNION's mother, Mary, wife of John MANNION was buried in the "Mogan plot" - she never left Ireland.

John MANNION and Mary MOGAN's other child was Michael MANNION, baptised 29 September 1860.

Michael MANNION  (baptised 1860) and his sister, Mary MANNION both emigrated to Queensland Australia.

Michael MANNION and Mary MANNION did not emigrate together. Mary MANNION arrived as a single girl, arriving 13 January 1883.

Both Michael MANNION and his sister Mary MANNION lived their lives in Gympie, Queensand, a gold mining town.

John MANNION, their widowed father, married Bridget WARD at the Catholic Church, Athenry, 29 September 1860.

John MANNION and Bridget WARD arrived in Queensland in 1884 with their four children, Ellen - baptised 1868, Malachy baptised 1872, and twins, Honor and Mary Theresa (Maria) baptised 1875 - all Catholic Church Athenry.

John MANNION died within 12 days of the family's arrival in Brisbane. He is buried in an unmarked grave at Toowong Cemetery. His cause of death, at age 55 was "old age"!

Bridget, his wife, and the children moved to Gympie, where John MANNION's two adult children, Michael and Margaret were living. They all

PS I purchased from Kieran Jordan, some years ago, his wonderful book (he even signed it for me): Kiltullagh/Killimordally as the Centuries Passed: A History from 1500-1900.

There was talk. oral history, that John MANNION had been married before he married Margaret MOGAN and that children from this marriage emigrated to the USA.

I think John MANNION's father was Thomas MANNION and his mother Mary DUFFY.

Mary MOGAN's parents were Thomas MOGAN and Mary HYNES.

Di, thank you very much for your email and your very detailed response. I have only just viewed your post and will need to take a few minutes to take it all in and see where the connections are, if any. (as a few Mannions in the parish at the time)

Since I posted, the Flannery connection that made the initial contact with us (based in the US) visited the parish, I along with a surviving Mannion connection (who travelled down from Dublin for the meetup) gave a tour of the Flannery and Mannion locations and filled in some blanks.

There were and still are quite a few different Mannions in the parish of Kiltullagh Killimordaly, so again will need to take awhile to see if we match up. Our connection was from Bresk in Gloves/Esker. The Mannion name on this family line sadly no longer exists but there are still living relatives in the parish and beyond that we were able to get in touch with.

Hi Michelle,

Conrad and Honoria were my great grandparents.  I was born after they both passed, but they lived in Jersey City, NJ when they died.  They must have originally lived in New York, because the first two of their eight chilldren were born there.   The third of their eight children, Anne Cecilia, was my grandmother.  She also lived in Jersey City until a few years before she died in 1980.  She lived with us the last years of her life.   Anne married Frederick H. Peeck from Leonia, NJ and they lived in Jersey City their entire married lives.  My mother, Helen,  was their only child.   My Mom and Dad, Kenneth Higgins, had seven children and also both grew up, married and lived their first years of their marrige in Jersey City.  I'm third in the lineup.  Six are still living.  Our youngest brother passed in 1984. 

 I've been to the cemetery at Kiltullagh, but could find only one Flannery and no Mannions so am assuming I was in the wrong cemetery.  The priest was not available while my sister and I were in the area, so would love to know more about the Flannerys and Mannions.  Based on my grandmother and her family, they must have been a hoot!

Kathleen, thank you for sharing that information. I can place you now on the family tree. The family line I was looking into was Anne Cecila's brother Arthur Michael Flannery (1889-1957).

one of his sons Joseph Howard Flannery (1912-1965) married Jane Randolf Evans...well, I have a contact for their son Michael Flannery and Michaels son Matt was in touch and indeed came here to Kiltullagh a couple of weeks ago.
