Would love to know more about my great grandfather John Foley b.1841/1842 Mohill co Leitram. His father was Michael Foley a shoemaker.
He married Julia Tuohy from Burntwood Tipperary in Macclesfield Cheshire England 1871. One of the witnesses was Sarah Foley.

  • Hi Jilly, there are 2 John Foley born to father Michael, only one in Mohill, born 8th November 1838, there is also a James born in 1842, both mother Catherine Tiernan, there is a possible sister born in 1844, Anne but in Glebe, Cloone, mother transcribed as Catherine Tiague, you can see the actual entries here for free but on search under year and month. https://registers.nli.ie/  There were no more children found, there is no mention of a shoemaker or any occupation, very little information was records in most cases, The marriages of Michael and Catherine took place in Mohill in 1837.

    There is a site on Leitrim here https://www.yourleitrimancestors.ie/ and there are a number of Leitrim Facebook pages, apply to join, Leitrim History and genealogy; South Leitrim Gedmatch (DNA page) County Leitrim, mainly tourist stuff; Old Mohill by Lloyd Donnelly, old photos of people and places and there are others too. There are a good few Foley photos but it is a common enough name there I think.

    Leitirm Library Local History section is helpful too.

    You can see the Michael Foley of the Glebe mentioned here renting two plots in Cloone, if this is your man you can use the maps to see the exact plot then and now, there is another Michael in Mohill, Tulcon townland, http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS…;

    You can see the civil townlands here https://www.townlands.ie/ Civil records began in 1864 so if they lived until then you could obtain there death entry, up to 1878 I think they are not online to view yet on the Irish Genealogy site. https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Click Civil Records, no church records for Leitirm on the site, it is free.

    GoodLuck
