Dear Ballinasloe Researchers,

I had a wonderful visit to Ballinasloe last summer and would love to know more about my family that originates from the Ballinasloe area. I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide as I seek more information about my great-great grandfather, John Manion (possibly spelled Mannion) and his wife, Alice Raftery (possibly spelled Rafferty).

John Manion was born in March, 1840 and lived 5 kilometers from Ballinasloe and 8 kilometers from Aughrim. He was a shepherd for a landowner and brought the landowner's flocks to Dublin for sale. He emigrated to New York City before 1873 (possibly around 1860 or 1861, according to a census response, but this may be incorrect). He entered the United States as a single man, following Alice Raftery who departed for the United States before him; they married in New York. His parents, John (Jack) Manion and Catherine Fahey remained in Ireland.

Alice Raftery was born in June, 1844. Her parents were Thomas Raftery and Mary Horan. Alice may have come to the United States with her parents.

Both John and Alice were Catholic and any parish records you may have to share about them or members of their family would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide as I seek to learn more about my Irish heritage.

  • Dear Researchers,

I made a mistake about the entry that I made and also have more information to provide. The John (Jack) Manions were 5km from Aughrim and 8km from Ballinasloe. They walked to Sunday Mass to Aughrim rather than to Ballinasloe.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!
