I believe that my grandfather was born on 18th November 1885 in Mallow Union Workhouse to unmarried Margaret O' Brien,  registered as John O' Brien but brought in Doneraile as John Fitzgerald which was his biological father's surname. I have searched unsuccessfully for a baptism record for him using both surnames and would welcome any suggestions or help with this if possible. Family information is that his mother remained single and brought him up as an only child and she may also have been known as Mary Margaret.

Thank you

Eileen

  • Eileen,

John would have been about 16 for the 1901 census. You could try a search of the census for Doneraile for John or Margaret, or browse the census at this link http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/.

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • 1901 Irish census shows John living with mother, aunt, and grandmother in Doneraile:

This might be your John in 1911 census:

  • Kieran and Patricia,

Thank you both for taking time to reply to my post with the census information which I had  already studied and yes, this is indeed my grandfather and his maternal family.

I have comprehensive information on John himself having taken DNA research to pinpoint his biological father and I am not looking to further my research on the Fitzgeralds or John at this time. It is his mother's family I am stuck on and have hit a brick wall in establishing who in fact these O' Brien's actually were.

What I do know is, Johns grandmother Mary O'Brien  died on 13th August 1908 in Doneraile age 86 thus born c 1822. I believe that her late husband (as yet to be identified was a gardener ) and Margaret was the informant.

I have been unable to accurately identify parentage of Margaret, young Mary or Hannah.

To date I have not found out where Margaret was in 1901as she was missing from the household return, although I do know she never married nor where Mary got to between the  1901 and 1911.

Hannah's date of birth differs on the two census entries and I have not found her after 1911.

Reason my enquiry was about trying to find a baptism entry for John, if any, was in the hope that  it may provide an additional clue as to O' Brien family associations ie names of any  sponsors.

Given Hannah's age range and the birth year of Mary Snr I  have a theory that perhaps Hannah may have in fact been an illegitimate daughter of Mary Jnr but unproven.Thank you for reading, best wishes
