  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you know what religious denomination the family were?

Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which may be helpful however, is the irishtimes website. Here, they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. I believe that Ardamine civil parish is in the Roman Catholic parish of Ballygarrett. To see what records are available in Ballygarrett follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Wexford&parish=Ballygarrett&churchid=574

You could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance.

If the family were Anglican you can find inforamtion on parish records at http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

For more information on the area perhaps you could check the Co. Wexford Library. Here is a link to their Local Studies section:

    http://www.wexford.ie/wex/Departments/Library/YourServices/LocalStudies/What/

I hope that this is helpful. Hopefully somone from the area will be able to add to this and give you some advice on history in the local area.

    Kind regards,

24 Feb 1821 Samuel Bell  Dublin to Dorothy Oughton, Ballytegan Gorey

Deaths as per Bates Funeral records

24 Dec 1922 Thomas Oughton  aged 82  removal from his address Gratten Street to Market Sq cemetery.

  • ome further clarificaiton, I found these in 'The old graveyard' By Thomas G Reynolds, this is a hand written local book written in 1970 as per as a consversation project

'Oughton Matthew 1861 and members of his family , erected by Ellen his wife late of Ballyrahen' , ( Ballyrahen is in Creagh Gorey)

John Oughon ' This is laid here by Dorethea Oughton. Mr John Oughton her husband died 17 March 1805 48 y, also William his son 1815 26 y'

Hester Oughton, Clonsilla, died 1853 aged 92 years

Peter  Lee and Elizabeth  1840 profession is listed as Apothecarry ?

This is a far as I can  take you with my limited  personal supply of local records. The National Archives are opening their records on line from July 2015 so do keep looking at their site.

The  river Ounavarra flows into the sea at Courtown, near Gorey.  Ardamine is the next townland up the coast, from Courtown village into, Riverchapel village, leading to  the Ardamine church along the Wexford coast.  Gorey town  where most the records record the burial of the Oughton family is about 4 miles inland from there.  Looking at your time line, this family may have originated in Ballyrahen ( Creagh) mid 1700's  as all the local area  named above are within 1 mile of Gorey town.  Try 1823 Tithe Applotment records, and 1863 Griffiths as this may fill in the name of the land lease holder.  Oughton is a unique name, all the above were possibley related. The above records  were taken from the Ch.O.Irl  records by the authors Reynolds and Fitzpatrick .  1901 and 1911 censes are also available foc to view.

    regards Sheila
