I recently signed up on the Ireland Reaching Out site & what a lovely gesture! You folks are the answer to many researchers' prayers. Thank you for your generosity. (I will be making a request soon.)

Since the original post in 2005, I found evidence that John P. Roane / Ruane returned to Ireland (in an attempt to cure himself of tuberculosis, I believe) and died in Colemanstown. - I've been told by another source that no records exist for the key period here.

-- For others who may interested, John had a brother Patrick ROAN (1829-1910) who also married in Lowell, Massachusetts (1853), but left the mill town to farm in Iowa. Patrick and Mary (HANRAHAN / HARRIHAN) ROAN had six children who lived to adulthood and many descendants.

  • Hi there,

Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. Colmanstown (without the 'e') is close to the town of Monivea. This is in the parish of Monivea. Please post your message in the parish profile here:http://www.irelandxo.com/group/monivea-galway

If you have any idea of the birth or death date, try contacting the General Register Office (GRO) or the parish priest in Monivea for more information. Local knowledge might be the key here regarding the TB story.

Best of luck in your research!

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • Were your Ruane's born in Ireland? I have Kate Mitchell, who Married Patrick Ruane in the Mountbellew area of E Galway in 1874; they had Patrick, James, John, Bridget, Kate and Margaret.  Patrick Ruane lived in Boston MASS, US. He returned to Ireland to settle property in 1922 and died in Boston in 1970. Let me know if this is a common ancestor!

  • Hi Kate

I am doing some digging for my cousin's inlaws who have a Ruane - Mitchell and Boston connection but possibly just a coincidence to yours

Patrick Ruane (Colemanstown) m Margaret Mitchell (Derrylissane, Menlough) and had children who remained in Colmanstown These are possibly linked to Paula's family

The above Margaret Mitchell's great nephew John Mitchell m Margaret Ruane also from Derrylissane

Margaret's parents were Patrick Ruane and Bridget Carty Patrick's parents were James Ruane (Derrylissane) and Bridget Costello

Margaret Ruane's uncle Michael Ruane born c1865 emigrated to Milton MA where his named changed to possibly Ronan or Roane His daughter Margaret was living in Milton MA in the 1980s when the Irish family visited

Unfortunately they lost contact and are trying to connect again with that side of the family Just wondering does that ring a bell with your family ? There are several Ruane families in the wider area so can be a bit tricky

    thanks

    \Martin
