If that is his real name.  I am looking for information regarding my great-grandfather who was orphaned as an infant.  Is there any resources I can find online without going directly to Ireland to find out who his parents were?  He was known as John Arthur or John Arther Ryan.  I am looking everywhere for records regarding his birth, with the information I have, his birthdate could be February 4, 1875, but his birthdate could be incorrect, which is why I am looking for orphanage records.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Civil registration of births was required starting 1864, so Ryan's birth should have been recorded.  You can search at irishgenealogy.ie.

The tree you shared shows John Ryan was born in Belfast. I went on the site that Patricia cited for the years 1870-1880 and there were 982 John Ryan baptismal records registered in Ireland in that time period. However, only 2 of the 982 were in the Belfast registration district.

See the third record on this link  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…; for a John Ryan born in Belfast on January 28 1876. Possible lead.
