My grandfather was John Ryan  born 1860 , He was in the RIC. In 1890 he married Teresa Lawlor in Galway and I think he spent rest of his life in Galway. He died in Portumna in 1920.

Vague message says his father was Michael  Ryan, died 1876 age 75.

Maybe from Ballinamona, Sherins Cross area.

Looking for information on his mother and any family members etc.

See second record for the 1890 civil marriage record for John and Teresa. John's father was Michael and he was deceased when they married. Teresa's father was Thomas Lawler and he was living. Looks like a brother John was a witness.

See second record for death of Michael Ryan, Family lived in Ballynamona townland in Ballynamona civil parish.

I assume that John was older when he married if his father died in 1876 at 75 and his mother was already deceased.

The RC parish would have been Hospital and Herbertstown. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found a couple possibilities:

John Ryan baptized May 11 1846 father Michael Ryan mother Judith Creed

John Ryan baptized August 19 1849 father Michael Ryan mother Margaret Hurley

These two records would be leads.

  • Ryan was the county name in tipperary and therefore as difficult to research there as Murphy. Most people have to confine their search to specific areas or times to reduce search numbers?

    Good Luck!
