According to family records, my great grandfather, John Thomas Burke, was born circa 1842 at Calla Kilconnal, Co. Galway.
I have been unable to find that location on any maps, which I have access to. I am hoping that someone may be able to help me with finding that location and any other information about John or his parents and siblings.
He came to Australia in the early 1860's and settled, initially, near the goldfields at Castlemaine, Victoria. He married Ann Mary Hardy on 2 May 1867.
The family moved to a farm in the Torrunbarry District about 25 miles west of Echuca in Victoria. He died in Melbourne on 18 March 1910.

j tolhurst,
It’s possibly Calla in the civil parish of Kilconnell (RC parish of Aughrim). It appears as Calla in the tithe applotment books for 1837 but by the time of Griffiths Valuation (1856) and later, it was spelled Callow.

It’s 336 acres in size and by the time of the 1901 census it had 2 houses and a total population of 17.

Interested to see the message re John Thomas Burke - he married the eldest daughter of the farm next door, Mary Hardy; she was the big sister of my grandfather Peter Hardy. Their farther James Hardy was born about 1815 in the parish of Aughrim-Kilconnell, Galway. I visited the grave of John and Mary Burke in Kew cemetery some years ago. Perhaps we could connect directly? Regards.
