I am trying to find out who Judith Rawly/ Raleigh of Tipperary, Tipperary parents were. It might be impossible since she was born in the late 1700s. I found some records on Ancestry.com. I searched RootsIreland with limited success.

Judith married John Hourigan in 1813.
Name
Judith Rawly
Gender
Female
Event Type
Marriage
Marriage Date
26 Feb 1813
Marriage Place
Ireland, Tipperary, Ireland
Diocese
Cashel and Emly
Spouse
Joannes Houragan

Per the Tipperary Parish Registry Dionisius Rawly witnessed the marriage.
Judith and John had at least 5 children- William, Daniel, Maria, Judith, and Michael.

Dionisius Rawly might have been Judith’s brother or cousin. He married Maria Ryan in Tipperary in 1811.
Name: Dionisius Rawly
Gender: Male
Event Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 7 Jan 1811
Marriage Place: Tipperary, Ireland, Ireland
Diocese: Cashel and Emly
Spouse: Maria Ryan

Dionisius and Maria had at least 3 children- William 1811, Patrick 1814, and Patrick 1819. Judith and Dionisius’ father might be William based on Dionisius’ eldest son’s name??

I found a tree on Ancestry with a Rahelly/ Raleigh family in Tipperary, Tipperary but it suggests that James Rahelly born 1821 in Kerry did not come to Tipperary until later when he married Kate Doherty of Tipperary in 1844. So, I am assuming no connection.

There was a Judith Raleigh listed as a sponsor at a Margaret Raleigh’s baptism in 1812 in Emly Parish. Margaret’s parents were Patrick Raleigh and Bridget Bourke. Could this be the same Judith Rawly?

Thank you- Mary

  • Hi Mary, I was reading your post with interest when I saw that you quoted my Tree. My great grandfather was Michael Rahelly (Raleigh in the U.S.) and I’ve been able to find quite a bit about him and his father, James, but now I’m trying to find info about his wife Catherine Doherty Rahelly who I believe died in Tipperary around 1855. I am planning to visit Tipperary in October.

Good luck on your continued search.

  • Anne,

I just noticed your message. I was helping someone else find more about their Raleigh family from Tipperary, Tipperary and figure out if they were connected to my Raleigh family from Emly, Tipperary/ Rawleighstown, Limerick. Thus far, I have not made a connection. I have been to Tipperary a couple of times and enjoyed my visit. Ireland is a beautiful country.

Have you posted your own message to the Tipperary, Tipperary site. The volunteers are always very helpful. I noticed lately they have been encouraging visitors to fill out a form letting them know when your visit is planned.

    Have a great time- Mary
