Hello

I am hoping there is some one out there who can help me with an elusive ancestor.

My Gr  Gr grandfather was Michael Kelly.

I have information leading from him to me.

However, the only information I have of him is a Marriage Cetificate from 1856.

The certificate is fom Wandiligong, Victoria , Australia.

He Married Anne Tillitson .

His Father is Listed as Rodger (or Roger) Kelly   :County Tipperary  occuppation: Brewer.

His Mother is Listed as  Mary ?Brennan ? (The name is difficult to read on the certificate).

And that is it.

If anyone can help I would be vey happy.

Many Thanks

Graham Brooks

  • Miriam,

    Thank you for the hints.

My search for Michael and his Family has been quite a journey.

I have come across the name Honora in connected families through my AncestryDNA test results.   Although of a much more recent date.

I have nothing of Michael before his marriage.   Without more detail and a date of birth it is very difficult.

But that is the challenge.   So I will press on.

Thank you again for the assistance

  • Hi Graham,

Michael Kelly (1793, Nenagh) was the brother of my 2x-great grandfather, Roderick (Roger) John Kelly (1797, Nenagh). They were, indeed, the sons of Roger Kelly and Honora Ryan of Nenagh.

My research shows Michael married Mary Clarke around 1820-21, and then married Bridget Tierney in 1835 in Borrisokane. I have a note that he died in 1877 in Nenagh - but there is no documentation or proof of that. The last child I have listed for him was born in 1840 in Borrisokane, so it is possible he emigrated to Australia after that - however, he would have been 63 years old at the time of the marriage to Ann Tillotson.

This is a complicated and difficult family to trace and there are lots of gaps, but if you are on ancestry.com, you're welcome to review the data on my tree (it is public). Also, if you've had your DNA tested, we should have a match if this is the correct Michael Kelly.

  • Frances.

    Thank you for the information.

I have scrolled through my DNA results and it appears there is no match between you and I.

The Michael Kelly I am looking for was married, lived and died in Wandiligong, Victoria, Australia.

He is recorded as being buried at Wandiligong in 1882.

I have no date of birth.   The only connection I have going back is his Marriage Certificate.

This states his Father as Roger Kelly , Occupation - Brewer. of Tipperary.

His mother is listed as Mary Brennan,

He's an elusive man this Michael Kelly.

    Again, thanks for your assitance.

  • Graham,

I have one more possibility: Michael Kelly (1793-1877 Nenagh) and Bridget Tierney (?) had a son named Michael, born 28 Sep 1838 in Borrisokane. I don't have anything further on him after that, so it's possible he wound up in Australia.

I'm wondering if you found his parents' names on his death record? I've noticed they (death records) are frequently incorrect as the person providing the information generally was going by memory and, often, 2nd- or 3rd-hand information.

If we're considering the same Michael Kelly, here, Roger Kelly (1755) would have been his grandfather - not his father. He also had an uncle named Roger Kelly (1797), who had a son, Roger Kelly (1827). Just some random thoughts...

This line has been problematic for me for a long time and I doubt it will ever be completely clear. So far, DNA has been only minimally helpful with the Kellys, even though I've had great success with my other lines.

    Good luck!
