From UK Census records I have traced back to my Great great great paternal grandparents, William & Mary Kelly (both born c.1811) As far as I can ascertain they had 6 children, Owen (my great great grandfather) born c1833, Bridget born c.1835, Patrick c.1839, William c.1841, Catherine c.1844 and Hugh c.1847, all of these children were born in Ireland. I presume the family left Ireland during the famine as they first appear in the 1851 UK census having settled in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.

The 1861 UK census shows Owen as being from Balinasloe but the 1881 census shows him as being from Athlone? I have searched for the family group on the Irish Family History Foundation records with no success, so by a process of elimination am assuming that they either came from Taghmaconnell or Moore, as there are no records existing for the birth dates I am looking at for Owen and his siblings.

Incidentally, William and Owen's ultimately worked as a Tanyard Labourer and Stonemason respectively and I understand that this area is linked with Tanning and stone quarries?

Owen married Catherine Noon in 1858 and census records show her as being from Galway. On their marriage certificate her father is shown as Michael Noon, deceased Labourer.

Can anybody help please?

Regards

  • I have an ancester, born about 1811, Eliza Kelly, who emigrated to Bristol England, then to Aston juxta Birmingham, then later to Kidderminster, Worcester. Any connection?
