Hi, I been searching for the birth or baptism of Michael Kelly, of Longford, for quite a while. He moved to Liverpool, but which year is uncertain. According to the census, he was born between 1861-1863 in Langford, Ireland, and according to his marriage certificate his father was a James Kelly, a schoolmaster by profession. He is my husband's great grandfather on his maternal side. His son James Kelly, born Dec 1884, lived in Liverpool. However, we have never found a birth entry in the U.K. I am aware, there is something called the Irish Register? However, nobody could tell us, what it is or where it is. I believe it was some sort of register for eligible citizens born outside of Ireland. Am I right? I would like to find details about Michael Kelly of Longford and his father James. Especially, with having the detail of Michael's father.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has an October 12 1859 baptismal record for a Michael Kelly with father James Kelly and mother Catherine Masterson. There are no records for the early 1860s. Emigrants often made themselves younger when they arrived in their new country.  The RC parish was Shrule.

Are you aware of any siblings to Michael?

  • Thank you. This sounds very interesting as Michael had a daughter called Catherine. I believe she was the first daughter born to him. His wife was called Esther and so was her mother. So following name giving traditions, that would make sense as their last daughter received the name Esther ( maternal side). I am interested in the bit of making themselves younger? Why would that be?  Also if the father was a schoolmaster, is it possible to find such a record? What difference, would have made his position during the famine?  Many thanks for looking on my behalf.

  • About a sibling? I believe there was a possible sibling called Patrick Kelly. Something, my mother in law told me. Not sure if he was indeed a sibling or another relative. She was only a young child when visiting. Thanks.
