Hello,
I am trying to find more about my G.G. Grand Parents and their Parents:
EVANS, Francis William - Father - EVANS, Thomas, a Gentleman!! Mother, JOHNSTON, Ellen
SMITH, Mina Findlater - Father - SMITH, Peter, a Land Steward, Mother GRANT, Helen
who were married in Church of Killann, Enniscorthy, County of Wexford, 27 May 1875
I have got a bit about Francis William but have drawn a blank on the SMITH side of the family.
Have also drawn a blank on JOHNSTON, Ellen, who died Whtie Hall, Limerick, Ireland, 18 Oct 1873.
Would like to hear from anyone who has these names in their tree.
All the best

Hi Diane,
Thank you very much for your message.
Have you tried looking for information in civil records? Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
Also, you could try looking in church records. Do you know what religion the family were? If they were Catholic then it is likely that Mina was from Kilann originally as generally (although not always) Catholic marriages took place in the bride?s parish of origin..Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. To see what is available in Kilann/Rathnure parish follow this link:
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Have you tried searching for the families in the 1901/1911 census records? These have lots of useful information in them. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Family Search: www.familysearch.org
Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/wexford/index.html
Irish Gen Projects: http://www.igp-web.com/wexford/index.htm
Wexford Local Studies: http://www.wexford.ie/wex/Departments/Library/YourServices/LocalStudies/
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Hi Diane, Hope this gets through, have already replied to you but think message was blocked for some reason. Peter Smith was buried in Killanne in 1869 and was originally from Scotland. Will send more details if this message gets through, please let me know. Best wishes G.B.

Peter Smith buried St. Anne's Killanne C of I (Protestant) churchyard 29/1/1869 aged 55 years late of MARNOCH, BANFFSHIRE.
"The sweet remembrance of the just shall flourish when he sleeps in dust."
It is probable that he was a land steward at Ballyhyland House, Caim, Enniscorthy, Co.Wexford. An Alexander? Smith was a witness at Maria's wedding and might have been a brother.

Hello Diane
I am not sure if you are still monitoring this thread but if so I may be able to help you with your Smiths in Marnoch. Have a look at my new website www.surveybooksnz.co.nz/FindlaterstoNZ
There is a section on "Given Names" and I have included Mina Findlater Evans in that section.
If I am on the right track I do have a transcript of the headstone for Peter's parents and grandparents in Marnoch kirkyard.
regards

I may have a connection to Thomas Evases and Ellen Johnstone. I have been researching the Johnstone line as my husbands g grandmother is an Ellen Johstone and I believe that the Ellen you are looking for is from an earlier generation as I have Thomas and Ellen being married on October 1, 1834 in Limmerick. I have attached a document which was written by my husbands g Aunt where the above are mentioned - while I am struggling to make all the connections/details of the document the list of families on the second page do appear to have some validity as I have been able to 'prove' a number of the families as noted in this document. If the Johstone family are of interest to you, I would love to connect so we can pool our research - such as mine is!

It seems the document is too large to attach - I have copied the relevant bit of the document below:
John Johnstone married Elizabeth Hartney and they had 5 sons and 7 daughters:
1. John Johnstone married Ellen Centrel and they had 4 sons and 3 daughters:
1.1 John - died unmarried
1.2 Charles married Jane Hartney - 1 son John
1.3 Henry - died unmarried
1.4 William - died unmarried
1.5 Mary married Dr McDonnell - childless
1.6 Eliza married Edward Quinlivan - one child
1.7 Ellen married Dr Patrick McDonnell 2 sons & 3 daughters (this is my husbands g. grandparents and the parents of the woman who wrote the document that I am using as the basis for this information)
2. William Johnstone married no children
3. Henry Johnstone unmarried
4 Charles Johnstone married Sarah Acres 2 daughters living
5 Joseph Johnstone died young
6 Mary Johnstone married Samuel Adams one son
7 Eliza Johnstone died young
8 Ellen Johnstone married Thomas Evases 4 sons 5 daughters
9 Margaret Johnstone married Thomas Robinson 1 son and 4 daughters
10 Averina Johnstone died young
11 Anne Johstone died young
If you think this Johnstone family is connected to your family of Johnstone's then I would love to hear from you so we can pool our research.
