Searching for any information on my King and Donovan family.  Thomas King married Mary Donovan and lived at 'Granny' Kilmacow.

Thomas King is listed in the Griffiths Valuation listing for Kilmacow civil parish from around 1850 living in Granny townland as you indicated. I searched for a marriage record for Thomas and Mary on the subscription site Roots Ireland but did not find a record. The only record of interest was a Novermber 1 1839 baptismal record for a Mary King with father Thomas King and mother Mary Donovan. The record was in the Templeorum RC parish records. Templeorum is to the northwest of Kilmacow.

Do you have any other info on the family? Were there other children?

  • Yes thank you.  Children of Thomas and Mary were: Margaret, Anastacia, James, Mary and Bridget.  Apparently there was a male child born and died Kilmacow?   On the shipping records it states that parents and all the girls were born in Kilmacow Kilkenny and James was born and baptised in Portlaw.  One of his sponsors was a Mary King from Portlaw.  I did find a marriage for Thomas and Mary on 31 May 1829 @ Ballinaroughery, Kilmacow.  Any more info you can provide would be most helpful.  Thomas' parents were James King and Anastacia Fitzgerald. I can find nothing on them. Thomas had a brother James born about 1815, Mary born about 1816?  both of which I can no information on, and Margaret born about 1827, who came to Australia as one of the girls in the Earl Gray Scheme.

The baptismal records for Kilmacow start in 1836 so any child baptized in Kilmacow pre-1836 would not have an available record.

I did not find the 1829 marriage record on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Can I ask where you located the record?

I'm confused why the 1839 record for Mary was located in Templeorum.

  • Hi Roger,  thanks for your reply.  I believe the male child of Thomas and Mary King died 1845/6, however I have not been able to find any information.  I am not sure why one of their daughters was born/baptised in Templeorum.  I thought it was not too far from Kilmacow.  Their surviving son was born in Portlaw.  Maybe they had family there.  Regarding the marriage of Thomas and Mary I paid to have a search done some years back and this is what was provided.  Then I found the actual register,  page 264 with the information and I cannot recall now which website, but it was time consuming.   I have to rely on websites  such as this one as I live in Australia.

Thanks for your help and would you be kind enough to help search for the birth and death of a male child of Thomas and Mary, if so I would be so grateful.

    Kind regards

I expanded my search on Roots Ireland to cover all of Ireland and I saw the 1836 record for James King in Portlaw. Besides the Mary record in 1839, the only other record that came up was a Richard King baptized January 24 1843 in St. Michael's parish in Limerick city.  Is that a possible record? That would be a good distance away from Co. Kilkenny.

FYI I live in Maryland USA.

  • Hi Roger,  I do not think Richard King is a possibility..  Thanks for looking.  Sorry I thought you may have been in Ireland.  We certainly are far and wide.
