King family from Galway

My great-grandmother was Mary King estimated birth 1845-1853 in Galway, Ireland.

Mary married on 26 Jan. 1871 in Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland. Her parents were listed as Haugh King, a farm laborer and Margaret O’Donnell. Both parents were deceased. Witness was Colman O’Donnell, who could be a cousin or Uncle. No record of Mary King in Scotland before 1871, or exact date she left Galway.

Seeking:

  1. Baptism of Mary King (1845-53) in Galway, Ireland with parents of Haugh King and Margaret O’Donnell.
  2. Marriage prior to 1850: Haugh King & Margaret O’Donnell, in Galway Ireland. Margaret had a brother or nephew Colman O’Donnell.
  3. Would like to find children of Haugh and Margaret King and what part of Galway they were from.
  4. Death records of Haugh and Margaret King both before January 1871.

I haven’t seen the name Haugh before and research said it was a surname. Would he have used another nickname?

Did anyone in Ireland track people who emigrated to Scotland around 1870?

  • Hi,

I checked the subscription site rootsireland but could not find any relevant records for birth or marriage. Without any idea of location, it is difficult to assess death records. There is no death record in Ireland for a person called Haugh King. In Galway many parishes didn't keep any records until the 1850s and the King family may be from one of these.

  • MACSmith,

You asked if anyone tracked people going from Ireland to Scotland. The short answer is no. It was then a domestic journey and no passenger records were kept of that sort of travel, or who had left Galway. There were regular sailings from Galway and other Irish ports to Glasgow.  Hundreds of thousands of Irish moved to Scotland for work, and went back and forth regularly. Your Mary likely went when she was of working age. Perhaps aged 15 or 16.  Possibly as a servant or to work in a factory in Glasgow.

  • Hi,

I think Hugh and Margaret are in my lineage but have not connected the dots yet.

I did find this  information about Hugh in a stie called

County Galway Surname Queries - RootsWeb

and the post is in the inquiries about the King Family from Connemara. The author of the post is TimothyPickels. See below.

    "Hi
If anyone comes across a Margaret King born Connemara area about 1859, father called Hugh King please let me know.
I found a Hugh King in the Griffiths Valuation living in Claddaghduff, which might be him.  The only thing I know about him is that he was a tailor and was deceased by 1878."

    Hope this helps.

" am looking for Hugh King who was a tailor by trade in the Connemara area of Co Galway. His daughter Margaret King was my great grandmother who was born circa 1860 and moved to England in the 1870s. Her mother may have been called Anne Meehan or Meheran."

I hope this helps as well.

  • Thanks, everyone. The last few posts must be another family because they are born later.

***I am seeking: Baptism of Mary King *** Born 1845-1853,  in Galway with parents Hugh King and Margaret O’Donnell. This would tell me where in Galway they lived.

Mary King married Patrick Joyce in Glasgow Jan. 1871 and her parents were:

Haugh, may be HUGH King, Farm Laborer, deceased before 1871. From Galway. Born 1815-1830?

Margaret King, O’Donnell was her Maiden name. Deceased before 1871.  Born Margaret O’Donnell. From Galway. Born 1815-1830?

Marriage of Margaret O’Donnell and Hugh King from Galway guessing by the 1840s.

Would the last name King be spelled another way? In Scotland I have seen it written as Keane.
