I have nothing that shows my family came from Ireland other than the results of Internet searches for the origins of the surname. "Knight". My great-great-great grandfather Ervin Knight (whom I have very little info on) listed his birthplace at Tennessee in the early 1800's (he later moved to Kentucky) and that's where my search goes cold. Not sure if this is too little to go on but I'd be grateful for any direction! Thanks in advance.

Hello Christopher,
That's a pretty tall order trying to find your ancestors.
All I can suggest is to go to the parish records and put in your names and see what it throws up?
www.irishgenealogy.ie and www.rootsireland.ie
Sorry I can't be of more help,
Regards,
Anne

There were and possibly still are Knights in North County Dublin,in an area called Rush. There may be some graves in Whitestown cemetery for Knight,am not sure.My mother had relatives of this name but doesn't know very much about them. There is a Knight pedigree file on-line which may help.

Christopher,
When you say Ervin was born early 1800's , would about 1848 be too late ?
Name: Ervin Knight Age: 2 Birth Year: abt 1848 Birthplace: Macon Home in 1850: Tennessee Valley, Macon, North Carolina Gender: Male Father Levi H. Knight born about 1809 , Buncombe North Carolina
Mother Elizabeth also born in Buncombe 1804
Found the name Ervin Knight in West Yorkshire, a Wesleyan Conformist family but much later in 1892 , even though the surname does and did exist in Ireland, I dare to say they were of English descent before they arrived in Ireland
The best advise I can give you at the moment is to try and locate all possible records in the USA, as it is possible that Ervin was not from the first generation born in the USA, maybe his parents or even their parents were the one that came from Ireland.
If you find this difficult or if you have no idea where to start, I suggest you use the brickwall forum from http://generousgenealogists.com/community/our-forums/ to place your request to find out more about Ervin, they supply a free research service done by professional genealogists and hobby genealogist together.
All you need to do is register for free with an email address. Use the USA boards there

Annemarie thank you so much for the work you did to come up with this. I have seen the name Levi mentioned a couple places so it's quite possible that this is the right person. I'll take this information and spend some time exploring the online records that are available and let you know what I find!
I have been very impressed with the responses here on Irelandxo and will be sure to keep in touch!
